Engine in and running, however cannot get it to idle, also seems to have constant misfire, gonna get a compression test done today if i can find my tester!

Jim

You are over thinking things again.

If it ran OK in the P100 why will it have dropped compression because you swapped the engine over ?? It can only be the carb or the timing.

Even though the old carb isn't what you want, for now put it back on, removing one potential problem.

Get the timing set either buy beg or borrow a strobe.

Jim.

How's it going? I'm in middle of moving house back down south, even further down south, do you need me to bring back my timing light or need anything else? I'll be home for good in December.

Hiya Paul,

I have the engine installed now, but it isnt running right, it has gone to a classic car mechanic that was recommended to my by the RAC. They are going to give it a going over and return it to me hopefully perfect!! i shalll now have to wait and see.

Not yet mate, the replacement engine i got has dramas, the cam is excessively worn, possible valve guide wear too. it has gone away for crack testing now. wont hear until the end of next week.

the one i have now has a good block, good oil pressure, good compression, just the head is suspect. with hindsight i should have gone for a recon, i was just trying to save money and it has cost me a lot more. There is a lesson here for people like me, wish i had learned it sooner!

I've lost the plot here, apart from the big ends rattling the 2.1 sounds a good, responsive engine, what was wrong with a replacement crank or getting yours ground? £100 plus shells and gaskets, if you have a spare 2 ltr crank I'd be tempted to work on the 2.1.

Jim took the 1st engine to a local specialist and advices block was a right off.

Engine No2 went in but was not timed and snapped valves off.

Engine No3 was from a P100. This has gone in but is the poor runner.
