Type 9 Gear Lever Internals

Thrashed

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hope we all got the car parts we wanted.

I have a little issue that has been bugging me. When i drive along my gear stick has a very good wobble on it! It is a rally design rose jointed quick shift and all gears engage nicely and it never jumps out of gear. I have checked the gearbox itself and this is solid

Someone suggested i check the gear lever saddle? This is what i have inside, but not sure if i am missing a piece?

Any ideas as i think this piece might be missing?

Thanks

Yep saddle is fitted I cannot remember but their are two for type 9 gearbox's black and white. Stick the gear lever and check for movement forwards and backwards and then sideways, try fitting some gasket paper or fag packet over the saddle then fit gear lever to see if the movement has improved.

Thanks guys. At least i am not missing any parts. On further investigation, it appears the reverse switch has a terminal snapped off, so looks like the gearbox has moved enough to have the reverse switch make contact with the chassis rail. Will investigate the gearbox mounts again.

Thanks for the help.

I know in the ford rally cars the gearbox mount was always upgraded, not sure how much power is going through the box but try this one http://www.vibra-technics.co.uk/kit_car/ford_type_9_gearbox/603/FOR172MX/ford_gearbox_mount_142mm_bolt_spacingpricy but I think you should be able to find it cheaper some where.

Thanks Mark. It looks like the main single bolt in the middle is loose? Tried turning by hand but about 3 threads from full in and not able to move. Will get a socket on it tomorrow, but 3 threads might be enough for it to jump around a bit.

Remove the bolt and cut of four or five threads from the end.

Don't try and force it in, it could snap off. That will mean a bugger job re-drilling the broken bolt out of a blind hole.

I upgraded my mount to the version that's fitted to the Morgan but had to make an adaptor plate to fit my chassis. It's cheaper than vibrotechnics and is on eBay. Don't forget that the main bolt goes into the gearbox alloy casting so if you really force it you could strip the threads on the box.

Alternatively ---- use a set screw, 8.8 grade much longer than required with a full nut wound on up to the head. Run into gear-box mount until tight & then follow up with the nut until g/box & plate are firmly united. Will ensure that all available thread in g/box is used --- cut off bolt head if a problem with ground clearance. HTH
