Hi all,

Built my car back in '96 and been a RHOCAR member but have just joined this site. Here is my first posting:-

I used a std 2L Sierra diff on the car but want to change this for LSD. Now as you are probably aware the 3.6:1 ratio gives the car a theoretical top speed of 150 mph but when I work out the achievable speed with my power output / breeze block aerodynamics of the Hood, the figure comes in at around 120. So the ideal diff for me would be a 3.9:1 LSD giving a theoretical top end of 130.

Ford didn't make one but my question is this: If I get an LSD from a Sierra XR4x4 (3.6:1) and a standard diff from a 2.0 injection (3.9:1) can I *bleep*ise the two to create a 3.9:1 LSD? Also is there a company that can do this for me as I am told it is very hard to take them apart, often resulting in breaking the special tool in the process (I'd rather pay someone else for the hassle!)

Cheers,

Boggie

This won't be much use unless you're willing to spend a lot of money, but I recently read about a bunch of like minded Saab drivers on a forum not unlike this one, who were clubbing together to have LSD's made for their cars. I think the company was called Quaife, who will do a limited production run to just about any spec.

Obviously the Sierra setup is a lot more common than Saab, especially in the after market tuning department, so they might have something off the shelf. Alternatively you could try a Ford tuning specialist like Burton Power.

Either way, call me sceptical but are you ever likely to achieve a theorectical top speed in your Hood?

you'll may like this one. i was told that the lsd and the normal diff have the same casings, but obviously different internals. like you, i had a a normal diff, and bought a lsd which had a cracked rear plate. not a prob i though as i can use the one off of the normal diff. not likely!!!! they are different, although, as the important dimensions have to be the same, ie. distance between half shafts i would have thought that you could take off the lsd mechanism and MAYBE bolt it to the normal 2.0 lsd gears???????? my original diff was 2.0 i and my lsd is off a xr4x4 ( estate, but not sure if it makes a difference)

estate diff is 3.6:1 as well

would be interested if you wanna give it a go.

I think that we're all waiting for you to do it, then tell us how it went.

Have fun.

Sorry. It made me laugh quite a lot. Thanks Jim, made my evening that.

Thanks all,

It seems I am exploring uncharted territory here which surprises me as the car is crying out for a 3.9 LSD.

OK, here is what I have found out:-

The LSD and standard diff have different internals so my (not so clever) idea of mixing them together will not work.

The best option would be to fit a bespoke diff, built by Road and Race transmissions (01959 525105). This would be 3.9:1 and have a locking type diff that would not allow a wheel to spin on it's own. This would cost £800, a lot of money but a discounted deal I have arranged for Hood builders, talk to Phil Stewart (mention Robin Hood) if you are interested.

Second option is to get Quaife to LSD your 2.0i Sierra 3.9:1 diff. This is a viscous LSD so would allow some slipping between the two wheels. Costs here are a little better but not by much and not in the spirit (or budget) of Hood.

Hoodz option? The late model Sierra 4x4 (2.0L) had a 3.9:1 LSD. Although it is a viscous item rather than locking it will give far better traction than the standard unit (donuts here we come!). If you can find one (I have but only after about 20 calls) get the whole subframe. It comes with the diff, disk brakes, calipers, handbrake mech etc and is a direct replacement for the one already in your car (by my reconing an easy afternoons' work - HA!) for around £300. Only problem for me is how to get it home as my road car is also a 2 seater!

Happy tripping!

Boggy,

Road and Race transmissions (01959 525105).

Is that a Biggin Hill number?

Are you out this way?

If so I may be able to help with collecting the

diff, but only this week.

The estate is getting chopped in on Saturday for a new 'un,

no soggy diffs are going in that one!

Email tucker_bob@hotmail.com if interested.

Cheers, Bob.

Thanks for the kind offer Bob but I have managed to scrounge a van from work. I just hope my girlfriend is strong enough to give me a lift to get the subframe in!

Cheers,

Boggie
