Unleaded Conversation

I've decided to pop a 2ltr cam into my 1600 pinto so at some stage will remove the head. It's not an unleaded one. I thought while it was off I may as well get it converted. There seems to be a lack of workshops down here in the south. The only quote I've had is £250. That seems very steep to me or am I being tight? At that price I won't bother. She runs very well. No smoke and valve clearances stable. I use additive. The cam only cost me £20 and is in good nick.

Thanks chaps. I think I created a red herring with the cam thing. I'm really not after large gains and am not going to change the engine. It's a cheap hardly used cam with followers so may as well drop it in. If £250 is considered a reasonable cost for unleaded conversation then I certainly won't bother. It will be interesting to have the head off anyway to check the condition of everything anyway. A project for a weekend sometime. Thanks for the replies. If anybody thinks they know of somewhere down here that would do the conversion cheaper then do let me know. Cheers.

Dan i had a chat with Saunders in Southampton last year and £250 is cheaper than what they quoted but not by much. Its not an unreasonable price to be fair.

Vulcan engineering, Thurstans and Gosnay's in Essex all quoted me about £40 per hardened exhaust valve seat fitted.

In my opinion it's not worth it for a standard 1.6 Pinto

Just keep using the additive.

With my crossflow engine I planned to do the unleaded valve seat conversion when I had a reason to take the head off, but it never broke down so kept using the additive. If the speedo in the donor car was correct it had 84000 miles on the clock first registered in 1984 so a lot would have been in unleaded. When I bought the car the last owner gave me a box full of additive.
