Quick acurate way to find it.

Place an open ended spanner over the threads that is a close as possible fit.

This will be the id size of the washer you need.

mm or inches will do.

What engine are you usingd

Ooops just seen your header.

I will send you some of various sizes and hopefully one should fit.

If in the unlikely event none do, drain your oil and pop down either your local garage, plumbers shop, or hydraulic outlet and you will get one no problem.

PM your address if you want some posting.

The old one will have work hardened. Just lay it on a the concrete. Blast it with a blow torch till it glows, not melts and let it cool or chuck water on it and it will be soft again and you can re-use it. Works for copper brake line ends too.

By all means do as Longborder suggests. Heat it to a low cherry red.

Do not cool rapidly with water or any liquid. This will make any metal hard so you would be defeating the obiect of the softening process.

Leave it to cool naturally. A washer will cool very quickly anyway.

And this would only be on a copper washer anyway.

Thanks all. Wanted to do a quick swap and not drain the oil if possible, as its all new and ready to go.

Might look into the magnetic one that Ken suggested.

Has anyone tried the Hoover on the oil filler to stop the oil draining when the plug is removed. You Tube Video.?

If you don't want to drain it then as above your best bet is to undo it as much as you can risk without it coming out and then ptfe tape it. Or i reckon you are in for a messy job. You might get away with minimal leakage if you put your finger over the hole as quick as you can, get someone to put the new washer on (unless you can manage one handed) and swap finger for bolt as fast as you can.
