Grease Your Props

Had my my prop fail on Wednesday, when I was accellerating I got a vibration at the rear. Dug into it a found the rear uj was knackered one of the needle roller bearings had shed most of its needles and was dry.

 

Ive rebuilt it with new ujs and everything looks good, but have few questions.

 

How often are people greasing their props mine was just over 10years and 15k miles in use and I'm sure i greased it 3 or 4 times.

 

How long would you expect the ujs to last?

 

As a side note the circlip pliers with interchangable heads are next to useless and about as strong as toffee.

Yes standard RHE prop, the ujs are nothing special pretty much an off the shelf part. I went to Dave Mac props in Coventry, 2 ujs where around £50 and they are Matsui UJ 023. The key dimensions are cap size and length between circlip grooves, the ones I took out are 23.8mm diameter caps and 61.85mm across caps.

think i remember RH saying grease it every 500 miles. I need to do mine again though that's for sure

 

Bloody hell! I need to get the grease gun out and make up for lost time!

 

I don't think I've ever greased a prop (although in my defence the Exmo would have been lucky to have done more than 2000 miles it it's entire life, and the Zero is on all of 200-odd....) !

Rh prop was greased every year prior to MOT which equals around 8 thousand miles per year. ( every 500 would need auto greasing on route sometimes)

RH prop was worn out at ?? 20,000 ?? Replaced with a Bailey Morris re-built & Florin has now just passed the 50,000 mark --- still just grease the U/J's every year before MOT.

The UJ grease nipples on the Superspec are particularly awkward! The rear one at the diff can be reached ok from underneath with the car up on stands, but the front UJ is hidden by the gearbox mounting.

 

Only way I could get to mine was by removing the tunnel cover and unbolting the gear-lever mechanism from the gearbox. Then youve got access down to the UJ. Even then I found I couldnt get my standard grease gun nozzle between the UJ yokes onto the nipple in the centre. I had to buy a smaller nozzle and even grind flats on the side of it so it would go in far enough!

I tried having an 1” inspection hole cut in the floor, but that doesn’t help as the way the U/J is mounted actually hides the grease nipples at the bottom. So as Andy said, the only way is through the tunnel top. I eventually gave up and let my tame mechanic friend do it.. Apparently the recommendation for the Sierra was to have it annually so I stick with that.
