Strange Headlight Issue

Afternoon all I'm a new member and this is my first of many messages ( hopefully not )

Got a 1986 2ltr efi based rh2b+

Just changed the sealed beam units to some new fancy iridium lenses with xenon ultimate h4 bulbs.

Simple job but I accidentally blew a fuse so replaced that and now the big issue.

Side lights and angel eyes work wilt he ignition off o/s and n/s.

Turn the ignition on o/s works fine dip and main beam but the n/s nothing .

Could any one give me some advise or pointer please please .

Martin.

I know very little about car electrics but, you seem to have proved the new bulb and wires leading up to them. Fuses are ok, so that pretty much just leaves the switch on the ignition and relay. Does the draw of the new bulbs require an uprated relay for the lights to work?

The auto supplier said that the new builds would be fine they are just standard type bulbs with a. Different gas to make them brighter

I'll go recheck all the bullet connectors I can find and see

I'm assuming the switch gear on the column is ok as the side lights work and the dip and main on the o/s work as they should

Thanks gargoil just been doing that same issue either lens and bulb connected

But did notice that the main be is coming on but it is very weak but still no dip on the N/S

So does that mean I'm looking for relays next?

Tyr putting a new earth , just use a lead direct from the battery direct to the light as a temp. measure if you have a dim glowing light that sounds like a possible earth issue to me, but lectricary is not my strongest skill.

I would be copying Ian's suggestion, which eliminates the negative side of the cct, to see if there is an improvement. If not, it might be that the relay was damaged when you had your short cct.

A multimeter comes in handy at this point.

Just been looking at some cct diagrams for lights and it would seem that the +ve side is common to both headlights as it leaves the relay. This would suggest that the relay is ok. Same for the sidelights, so a bad earth from the nearside lights, does look favourite.

Thanks all was a bad earth

Too me ages to hunt the blighter down

Eventually found it the very last crimp hidden half way up the chassis

Looks like someone ( not me ) had crimped the insulation not the wire

Thanks for the help very much appreciated
