Petrol Smell

I have been smelling petrol recently. Not from the engine bay but seems to be from the access to the fuel tank where the pipes enter. There is no sign of any leak as it is all dry around there. Followed the pipes and no leaks. Any clues please?

the newer additives eat the older fuel pipes..

a few years ago, new pipe that had sva/iva complaint markings was being eaten by the fuel

My petrol smell came from the tank sender unit, it only leaked when I was driving about. Remember when you do any repairs do not use any type of silicon sealer it gunges filters, pump, carbs and any filters in the tank.

Thanks for that.Smell is certainly from that area. I presume there is some kind of gasket. I'll take everything apart when it comes off the road and have a good look around. Don't think it's a serious issue but best he safe!

Mine lake at the filler to tank pipe is welded to the tank.

Tried to trace it for about a year.

Overfilled one day and found it through it now being wet.

Going to attempt repair with plastic metal.

If not successful it looks like an awfull tank out jobby.

Check for breather on filler neck! This usually has a none return valve fitted in case is ever upside down. Mine had come disconnected so tank was breathing into boot area. Took ages to find but once located and repaired no more fuel fumes.

Hi mine had the fuel pipes eaten by Petrol when queried someone said the Government have OK'd the addition of Ethanol to Petrol to purportedly make it burn cleaner. Understand it can also destroy Fibreglass Tanks that some 60's /70's motorcycles used to fit.
