I noticed the last few weeks that my freelander was never getting up to temperature, a bit of searching on the td4 owners club points to a really common issue of the thermostat sticking open, anyway I started the job today and JESUS Christ it was the most awkward job in the world... the access to the 4 E8 Torx bolts holding the plastic housing in place is done via the front driver side wheel well, and requires the upper engine mount removing, the engine jacked up and down to get the bolts out, and the lower engine undertray and frame removed... I started at 10 this morning and with no light left I have managed to get the 4 housing bolts back in but not tightened.... I spent 2 hours getting one bolt out.

So the job carries on tomorrow, my the bruising on my hands and fingers does not make it impossible to do.... never again..,

Its only an 06 plate... if you did this job in the bmw the m47 engine was fitted in its easy as the engine is longitudinal, mounted transverse in the freelander leaves no room what so ever

4 Hours and a cannibilised (£15!!!!) 27mm spanner to change the oil filter on a Peugeot diesel engined

Kuga. Ford re-engineered the inlet manifold, blocking acces to the hexagon headed plastic cap.

Morons!

Bob......getting grumpier every day......

Lol on the note of the 27mm spanner the Freelander is the same but with a flexi head ratchet spanner its a dream to do as the Freelander is also the same. I just purchased a cheap Chinese one of the bay as its onku used for the oil filter housing once a year. Maybe not the news you want now but at least you know for next time.

All back together minus the plastic engine tray which got slightly broken. And all working. Needle now sits smack bang in the middle. Interestingly enough with my Bluetooth diagnostic plugged in, the middle of the gauge range is from 70-90 so not a linear scale at all...

Cheers Michael.

The problem is, it was my son's car, he lives in Cornwall & had come to London for a wedding, leaving his car

with me to change oil & filter (easy right?) then he was going back to Cornwall early the next morning.

I searched high & low for a 27mm spanner, but I could only get a "professional" one from Halfords,

then I had to saw it in half to get it to fit. I nearly cried while I was cutting it!

He now has a new Kuga with a Ford Duratorq engine which is far better as he has to get it serviced "professionally"

in Cornwall.
