Sorry if its a really stupid question but is the removal of the belt just a case of loosening the tension on the belt via the pulley (see photo)? I take it there is no timing etc to setup.

 

And I assume the cracks are in the belt are bad!!

Wow, that does look bad  (Later:  maybe it's intentional ?).    And yes, all you do is put a ring spanner on the nut on the idler wheel and rotate it.   The wheel moves sideways and the belt will come off.  Dead easy.

 

HOWEVER.   Before you remove it make a drawing of the way the belt is put on.   Once you have it off it is easy to forget (ask me how I know)

I learnt the hard way as well so try and remember to take photos that way I can't draw it incorrectly either.

Don't think its intentional, just old age.

Ordered 1 from rimmer bros.

Another job on the "to-do" list which I never quite get to the end of!!

Do we have a part number for the belt?  (click/link?)  Looked at mine last night and it's just the same.

 

Drove it 36miles to work this morning, will I get home again?

 

As I guess these are original items probably over ten years old - has anyone looked at the timing belt under the cover too see it's state?

Hi Steve,
You may recall I had to replace both belts on my Rover engine a couple of years ago (long story but broken shock absorber > flying spring hat > cut auxiliary belt > jammed around crank pulley > seized engine > snapped cam belt !!)

My car had been on the road for 8 years, although only done 3k miles, but the actual condition of both belts was ok. None of the cracking as seen in the photo above.

Parts I used for the rebuild were:
Cam belt - ContiTech CT803 (Eurocarparts p/n 325770465)
Alternator drive belt - ribbed 1152mm long. Rover PQS101590 (Rimmers) (Eurocarparts equiv p/n 202660085

Some Rover engines have a different alternator position, so it might be worth checking if the aux belt run and length is the same for both. Im not sure. My alternator is at top above the water pump.

I ordered the same alternator belt as Andy, I did find cheaper ones but wasn't sure so got original from rimmer's cost me £21.90 incl p&p.

Mine was also the type with alternator above water pump, I think the other type of belt depends on if yr engine was supposed to have air com. I think its on the list of engine numbers Alan compiled
