Cosworth 4 Pots And Sierra M/c

Is anyone running cossie 4 pots with a sierra master cylinder and no servo? I have been offered some good condition cossie calipers for a reasonable price and am tempted, just wondered what they are like without servo? I am currently running standard sierra calipers with no servo and find the braking feel to be fine.

Hi Stuart

I am running cossie 4 pot calipers with 284mm vented disc's but have a Peugeot 405 brake master cylinder with servo.

The brakes are that good I only have to touch them.

I am sure that they would work well even without a servo fitted .

I changed mine to the 405 unit because I did not like how close the servo was to the exhaust outlet.

Regards

Martin

If your brakes feel fine i'd leave them as they are! The brakes you currently have are for a car well over a ton and now being used on a car well under a ton so are more than capable with loads to spare.

I assume this would only be an upgrade on the front axle. You don't want them to be too powerful that the rears don't get a look in. Unless you have a balance bar etc

I still have the servo on my setup but using standard sierra vented fronts and drums rear but can lock the brakes without a problem.

Thanks all for the input. Think I'm going to go with the tried and tested Mondeo setup instead.

agent_zed - The feel is fine, but i think with the increase in power I am expecting over a standard pinto, I'd be happier with a better performing setup.

ah ok sorry didn't realise you were adding more power into the mix.

I am certainly far from a braking expert so just my thinking... I wonder if the problem you might get is brake fade if you are on the brakes more. I think even if you do change to bigger calipers you may also need to be looking at different pads and the type of disc - do you have vented at the moment? It's a relatively light car so hopefully won't need quite the same stopping power as a mondeo for example as you will be a fair few hundred kgs lighter, which won't generate as much heat in the brakes.

A lot quicker and easier to stick some mintex pads on and see if they change your current brakes, unless of course you already have!

Others i'm sure will know more and have actual experience over my ponderings :)

An alternative to the Mondeo set up, is the 4x4 sierra calipers that have 60mm pistons, and 260mm discs. I bought the mondeo calipers, that use 300mm discs, but was taken aback by there physical size & weight. The 4x4 calipers fit without modification and give me a better feel as I have no room for a servo now.

Guest ant.b

So I didnt realise the 4x4 calipers and 2wd calipers were different. Ive bought the 2wd 4pots, which someone just mentioned arent a straight fit... bugger!

I have the same on mine 2wd calipers with green stuff pads that work well with the extra power as the old ones suffered brake fade a lot , had to get a small amount milled off the lug mounts to get centered on the disc , all ok since fitted years ago !
