really need your help with headlights on sierra 1988 loom.

 

i have wiper and indicator stalks of 87gb variety.

 

issue is

 

1. get side lights, then dipped beam (using right stalk)

no flash or main beam on left stalk

 

2. Put earth to steering column body (top bit between switches)

get side lights but no dipped beam

get flash and main beam but only on right hand light

 

in both cases i have small spade earth to spade connection on top of wiper (right) stalk

 

relays all changed, checked a double checked for dodgy earths.

 

can you help!!! before we go mad, 2nd week on it now

What loom are you using? If its the donner one it could be a relay not working I had it on mine I cut too many earth wires out of the loom 1 being the earth from the main been relay

it is the sierra loom, earths to relays? I will check

 

what I did not mention was right hand light has a blue/white wire, which according to the wiring diagram acts as switch earth I think. this is connected to the earth position on the bulb. therefore no "normal" earth to this bulb, although there is to the sidelight.

ok done some fidling

 

got

side lights

dipped beam

flash on main beam

no main beam when stalk moved forward

 

continuity across stalk pins 56

 

when flash is operated it looks like it takes same route as main beam, now i am confused..............why does it not work

What I did was to remove the earth wire from the main beam relay

I will give that a try this weekend

 

need to move on, spending too much time on this job at the cost of others.

 

will give it this weekend, after that i will come back to it later, may have one of those flashes of inspiration whilst walking round Asda (other superstores are available).

 

still looking to how i can cut out the dim/dip lighting though, i hear you can put wire in to short it out, i have 2 relays though

Its done, at last

 

turned out to be the 2 little wire that go to the dipped beam relay and the inherited fuse box also had the wrong relay in!!!!

 

all sorted now, thanks Peter for the help

 

result of all this is that i now know my entire wiring loom Intimately .............
