Pinto Engine Advice Needed

I have my 2L pinto engine in bits at the moment and a friend has commented that there are some marks in the bores he says from where the piston has been sitting maybe from a bit of damp and advised that i should not use the block. I Got another block from a good friend which was running well and this has similar marks on number 3 but no where near as bad.

the bores all feel smooth to the touch but just have slight marks.

Are these block no good as they are or are they fine? not sure if he is being a bit anal or if he is valid in what he is saying will try and get a pic in the week.

Does any one know how much a rebore would cost???

many thanks

If it is only surface marks I suspect they'll be fine - as a precaution a honing tool can be used to lightly freshen the bores and fresh piston rings used. A rebore is quite drastic (new pistons) for what sounds like minor defects.

If your really concerned a rebore , but if they are slight marks a hone and re-ring should do the job ,if its not using oil and compressions are ok why bother ? it will probably run for years as it is ,there is alot of bull crap put out about engine builds ok if you want perfection it takes time and money sometimes for only minor improvememt when a Clean normal build would be ok for the use intended my opinions only mower man

the best way to dicribe them is a sort of white worm mark. My thoughts were as others have posted and i have a set of new rings to hand. The engine not at mine anymore but will try and get over to take a pic today.

The compression of the engine when running was good about 10.5

As others have said hone and new rings it is rare for a pinto to require a rebore unless it has had broken ring/s as 200,000 plus miles is not unheard of with very little ware in the bores.

Hey up Keith, hope you're well and my best regards to swmbo.

The white worm mark you've mentioned, I've seen this before on a mates pinto. Basically we stripped it down and when it came to the rebuild we noticed this mark, about 1" long wiggling it's way down the bore. We couldn't figure out what had caused it and our best guess (but by no means correct) was that the mark was caused by a mixture of water and oil (you know the creamy white colour when the two mix) had dribbled into the bore when the head was taken off and then dried leaving this mark.

Anyway, a run through with a honer shifted it and when the engine was back up and running, there was no loss of compression in that cylinder.

To cut a long storey short, don't know what causes it but you're block is fine and only needs a tickle with a honer.
