Yoko Ado8R Tyres

Are you after wet weather grip or dry weather grip?

 

If wet weather grip then uniroyal Rainsport3 are hard to beat.

 

If dry weather grip then you will struggle to find anything with significantly more dry grip then what you have while sticking with a standard road tyre, you might find small improvements but nothing massive. option is looking at things like r888 if you are happy to go semi slick or r1r which is more of a normal tyre tread depth but uses the r888 compounds.

 

 

Edit. Of course if I engaged my brain before commenting I'd remember ad08r is yokohama equivalent of r1r

Thats fair enough, and exactly why the R1R exists. T1R has always been a budget tyre, just good for what it costs. R888 are the other extreme and a proper semi slick with sticky compounds, the R1R is designed to be a full road tyre with sticky compound of the R888, so if you liked the R888 in the dry youd probably like the R1R. AD08R are good too, so cant really go wrong with either

I run with Hankook optimo on the rear of the Elan, verds at the front. I find them good in dry but very good in wet. In fact its raining in Pompey now and drive back home was fine. They give good predictable feeling and you can see them clearing water at low speeds. Ill be putting them in the fronts when the verds needs replacing.

I'm running r888's on my evo (and mk2 escort before that) and they are probably the best tyre I have used ON DRY ROADS, like people have commented they're quite 'fun' in the wet, and that's with 4wd.

I have T1R's on my Zero and they are good for what they are. Dry roads you could not complain, predictable grip all the time. In the wet they are reasonable. If you push too hard in the wet they do let go, but nothing scary if driven normally. I tested this theory at the weekend too.

 

Just my experience. I have used Yoko A539 and Toyo Proxe4. Both were OK, but the T1R's are a big improvement.

The T1Rs seem to perform well in certain sizes & badly in others. Mine were 205/45/17 on my MX5.

Frankly they were below average in the dry, & scary in the wet.

I thought at first they must have had release compound but even after 2000 miles I was going to ditch

them & buy a different set of tyres, but my son decided to sell his MX5 & buy a boat after moving to Cornwall.

His wheels had been refurbished, so it was a no-brainer, I expected to have to change the tyres, but the Wanlis

have been just fine in dry & wet. When they do need changing I'm going with Kumho Ecsta KU39 which have

had a very good write up specifically for the MX.

Spent Stoneleigh speaking to lots of people on tyres, not just RHOCaR members but also some other marques.

 

So I think I've made my choice and in the interests of feedback to the club, I think I'll swap my R888's for some AD08's. They're £73.99 a corner with Kwikfit, and that's fitted on your drive versus £70 from Camskill just for the tyres alone. If I can get the R1Rs for a similar price then fair does, but cheapest I can find is £89.10 on mytyres so I think I'll plump for being a little guinea pig :)

 

Happy to sacrifice a little of the R888 ultimate grip for a more overall performance in adverse weather conditions...

 

Will check with my local "man who can" tomorrow on the R1Rs just to be safe, otherwise will plump with "the boys you trust" in blue... :)

any one tried these ? they are looking like a good option as they have reasonable wet rating (B) i need more rear grip in the banshee the pilot sport 3 are great tyres but cannot handle the brutal bhp and torque delivery on the banshee.

 

If your struggling for grip under 300bhp with pilot sport 3 you need to have a serious look at suspension geometry possibly new suspension and your diff if it's an old Sierra lsd it will need a rebuild if it's open diff go for a plated locking diff.

There is nothing to look at, it's a live axle mk 2 escort with quaife atb. The grip problem comes from having a shat load of torque being delivered instantly with the supercharger the pilot sports were fine with old set up, of 170bhp and what ever torque it threw out. Now with 265ftlb of torque, most of which is there in the low 2000rpm range it needed more grip from a softer tyre which the r1r has given without losing all wet grip as you would with r888.

Woah that's some serious torque at low revs I'm guessing it's not a centrifugal supercharger then is it a roots or twin scroll. I'm not making that torque till 5500 rpm even with a turbo (obviously designed to hit Max boost at 8500 rpm)

Live axles aren't the best for putting power down but there's still a lot to adjust that could help
