Pinto Head Tightening Sequence

Hi, can't remember the exact torque settings without referring to my notes, but I always tighten my head bolts using a clock wise pattern starting at one of the centre bolts and working my way outwards. I do this three times upping the torque setting after each cycle. This ensures the bolts are tightened gradually and nice and evenly. Maybe another poster can advise on the correct torque settings. This method has always worked perfectly for me with no problems.

Regards,

Jason

Hi,

I thought the later "stretch" bolts for the pinto were something like 40Nm, then 70Nm then wait a bit and tighten another 90 deg

Hope this helps, not confuses more !!

stage 1 40 to 55 Nm

stage 2 50 to 70

stage 3 73 to 83 after 20mins.

stage 4 95 to 115 after 15mins running.

Assuming its a pinto.

my haynes 82-85 says the same. can't see anything in the suppliment about the later bolts. I used these values when i did my head using the t55 torx bolts. Haven't had a prob so far after a couple of hundred miles (fingers crossed)

You lot must be mind readers.

Just popped inside to check the torque figures as the head's just gone back on and there it is top of the pile, if only you could do a virtual head gasket I wouldn't be covered in oil & muck.

Thanks for the data gents.

reminder to self,

when using a 2ft long torque wrench its easy to do stage 1 & 2 think it through and don't use a 10" slide bar for the 90 degree twist unless your popeye.

Heads on & running just the MOT to arrange now.

Anyone know how I prove an engine swap was completed correctly? recently replaced the 1.6 with a 2ltr, want to make sure the log book tallies but when on the DVLA site they wanted info on the garage completing the swap, how do you explain its a DIY task??

You may need to get a friendly garage just to stamp something to say it was changed. My vin plate needed fixing better following a dvla Build up inspection and they let me get a garage to sign a form to say it was done so i didn't have to bring the car in again.

alternatively just send them a picture of it in, not that one pinto looks different to another.
