Greetings fellow merry men

Have just purchased a Robin Hood widebody for some summer open top fun

All good apart from no wipers ( I have read all threads to-date on this topic but would like further help)

The current stalk fitted states Escort:

1-The lights work correctly on the left stalk

2-The right stalk has the wipers controlled by up & down movement (not twist) & washer button on the end - despite a live feed into the plug wipers & washer do not work

3-I took a feed directly onto the washer pump & this works fine

4-I will need to do the same to the wiper motor & check the fuse box (both difficult to access but old clips of Houdini will help)

Question 1 - should I expect the wipers & washer to work with this stalk,I

guess the answer is Yes?

Now with the car came a spare stalk 95 AG 11K665 DA which research reveals is also a Fiesta unit but I guess from a later model, the only difference I can see

is that the wipers are now controlled by a twist control with 6 settings!

Question 2 - Should I change stalks, or just concentrate on checking that the wiper motor is alive first

I guess the previous owner was either intending to upgrade the stalk, but not sure why ( my bad did not check the wipers & washer, hey it was a dry sunny day!) He did say he had not taken it out in the rain, but this was her response to not ftting the brand new wet weather gear

At a quick glance I suspect the wiper is a mini model,to be confirmed

Sorry to have droned on but I do tend to suffer a bit of the old OCD when

things don't work as expected

And finally, just like to say what a great forum this is,not many stones unturned by the looks of it,great stuff

Thanks Kevin

If it helps, here are my notes on how the wiring works with a mini wiper, the Sierra column stalk and the Sierra wiper relay... but let me explain a little on a few things.

- Ignore all the "X" reference numbers, these are for my custom loom that I made myself, so these are only references I understand what they mean :) they are for a Wurth TRM.

- The box at the top represents the column stalk switch, and the links show how the terminals are connected with the stalk in the relevant position (0= normal resting position)

- The box at the bottom right is the relay, I've put two versions of pin references on there as different Sierra ages had different pin numbering convention

Hi Kevin, we are just up the road from you between Salisbury & Stockbridge, happy to help if you wish to drive up one day. Can then play vehicle electrics if you wish, regards Bob.

May well take you up on your offer, depending how I progress

Ford were fairly consistent with their wiper terminal numbers. Below pic is sierra, same vintage as your escort stalks, and gives a fair starting point. If you have an old fashioned mini wiper motor with the self park box with five terminals, still on it. If there are just three wires sticking out of the motor you have lost the box.

Note terminal 4 needs a live supply. Trad ignition live but could be fused constant live and the wipers will complete a park cycle even if you switch off ignition.

Well started with basic troubleshooting of the fuse boxes, basically had two 10 amp fuses missing & one 15 amp fuse came out in two halves when I retrieved it for inspection!

The blades were left in the holder & the plastic top half was held in my pliers when I gently extracted it from the block!

All fuses replaced with new & bingo,I have 2 speed wipers & fully functional screen washer,it all could have been worse, thankfully not!

Thanks to those of you who gave me starters for ten

Check the fuse box I cant use the button on the end of the stalk as it blows the fuse I dont know why But I now use the aluminium stalks from gbs so dont have washers anymore and they work fine

This is because you have a mix of stalks and wiring loom. You (or someone) has almost certainly removed phase 1 stalks and plugged phase 2 stalks into the old loom. The pin-outs are NOT the same; you need to do a bit of re-wiring for it to work.

Early sierras up to 1987 used a fused supply direct to the washer motor and the column switch operated on the earth return through the switch terminal 53C.

After 87 the column switch supplied a switched live terminal 53C again to the washer motor which then returned through an unswitched earth W on the column switch. Combine this with the VG loom and you get a short direct to earth which blows fuses for the washer.

Even later RH/RHE/GBS (whichever) tried altering the polarity on the switches but I think that was just for lights.

just a note - as far as i know you need a windscreen washer for mot (assuming you have a windscreen). I know mine gets checked (About the only time it is ever used). Doesn't have to be stalk activated though could just be a switch somewhere.
