Pinto Cam Timing

From the Kent cams website:

For many years the most commonly used method has involved establishing top dead center (TDC) as a datum (zero degrees) and positioning your camshaft with its inlet valve at maximum lift at a given position relative to this datum.

For example take our Ford x/flow camshaft number 234 which has a quoted figure of inlet timing @ full lift = 103 degrees. This means that the inlet valve should be set to be fully open at 103 degrees after top dead center. Therefore using a protractor or timing disc you can establish 103 degrees after TDC and it is at this point that your inlet valve should be fully open. Minor adjustments from the standard timing point can be made with the aid of adjustable timing kits or an offset dowel.

This is the method I used

as an additional check (assuming my thinking is correct) if you remove the nut and washer off the front of the sprocket you should be able to see the grooves for the woodruff key.

The standard pinto sprocket has 3 holes, one of which would normally have the pointer showing at the back on the backplate. This hole is the one inline with the groove on the shaft (there are 2 grooves i think but one is bigger so the sprocket only fits one way and as they are inline and the hole is only on one side it has to be that hole).

So with the grooves lined north/south and the hole at the bottom it should be in the correct position.

well that's my understanding anyhow.

Thanks for confirming that train of thought, a friend had suggested the same thing and having checked it it all looks good.

It was one of those things that's been bugging me for a while so just wanted to double check as I was never sure I'd set it up right to begin with.
