Clutch Cable Fitting

OK looks like mine is similar on gearbox end but my cable has no adjustment on it? So removed pedal box cover to find a yellow half wheel ratchet type thing but previous owner has drill and put a bolt through it? Have attached pics of the cable and yellow bitpost-6200-0-13274600-1500739094_thumb.jpg

i would guess the previous owner has used a cable with a threaded nut adjuster on it and has locked the yellow part as it is no longer needed as the adjuster.

If you want to revert it back just remove the nut and bolt and check if the yellow part can be sprung back. If it is still all there and working you just put the cable on the gearbox and then pull the yellow bit back to attach the cable. The cable is then held by the spring and adjusts itself as needed.

You might find though that the yellow quadrant doesn't give enough pull as the pedal travel is less than in the sierra. So you can either put a strip of metal along the yellow quadrant to hold the cable up higher and get more pull or buy a bigger quadrant i think the granada one is 55mm and normally black.

Mine is the yellow one and is fine when cold but when my cable is warm it can sometimes catch reverse.

Also if you have a 4-2-1 exhaust you might want the longer 2wd cosworth cable instead of the standard sierra so you can route it away from the hot exhaust.

Cheers for the reply, I'm running a vauxhall redtop c20xe engine so exhaust is passenger side of car so no need to worry about heat. The cable provided was the one the previous owner had fitted, got no idea why the bolt is there mind as no manual adjustment on the cable at all unless the yellow quadrant is no longer working correctly?

Gonna remove bolt and fit cable tomorrow and see what clutch I get if any, if I don't will replace the bolt and see again what I get, but I might just go for a black quadrant version by what others have said to me, just need to work out what clutch cable I need for this one

thats weird as if no manual adjuster on the cable and a locked yellow quadrant there will be no adjustment in the system. I guess if it was pulled tight and then the quadrant was bolted it would probably be ok for quite some time until the cable stretches or the clutch wears down a bit.

Maybe the teeth that should engage on the quadrant had worn so the previous builder just locked it off?!

As long as the yellow quadrant springs backwards and there is a black plastic toothed part (you can see the toothed part in this pic https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MzkyWDYwMA==/z/AlIAAOSwawpXrwJh/$_58.JPG) that engages when you press the pedal it should be fine.

Well put cable in place with no bolt on quadrant and no clutch pedal, so was gonna try it with the bolt in place but the cable is like an inch short and even pulling on it it won't come anywhere close. So looks like new quadrant is needed, are these easy to fit any guides on here or the net anyone knows of? And am I right in saying my cable would be 125cm long as that's what it measures but can't find any that length?

No just had a look at my spare and there are no numbers on it. For what it's worth the outer casing is about 100.5cm long and the inner 132cm from end to end including nipples. I did try a longer one which I think was cosworth escort or sierra but it was too long so my mate took one off a mark 2 sierra which runs down the side of the engine either between the carbs or just forward of the front one. Can't remember which and can't get to it look at the minute as the garage is full bikes and pedal unimogs etc.

Yellow/black quadant only releases when clutch pedle is pull up past its normal rest position then quadtant can be moved back against its return spring.

Can be a 2 person job depending haw long your arms are. Then cable should easily fit.

The quadrant you have in the picture is as it should be (without the bolt). Your pic does not show the other part of the self-adjusting tensioning mechanism which is shown in the pic I have included. This bit has to be present to lock the quadrant and pedal together so they move as one. My pic shows the positions, but the pedal and its cage are absent. The little toothed pawl sits in the pedal cage. The tongue attached to the side body of the main mounting cage is there to lift the toothed pawl out of engagement to allow the quadrant to rotate free of the pedal position when you fit a new cable. To free the pawl the pedal is pulled back toward the steering wheel. A length of rope will do this easily.

If the pedal is not locked to the quadrant then this mechanism is not operating correctly, the teeth on the pawl have worn or the spring has failed or it's been removed.

So quadrant looks OK. You need to check the toothed pawl.

Cheers for the rely, the little. White part is in place and it does still work, last night I removed the bolt and then hooked the cable in place, then physically pushed then yellow quadrant back towards the steering wheel as much as I could and now I have a bit of a clutch peddle there think it need to go another couple clicks to get a nice pedal feel there but it will go in and out of gear now with the clutch, mind u it does seem a bit stiff to go in and out if gears so may need to do a oil change on it

If you can't get enough pull on the pedal because the teeth are worn then you can space out the cable with washers. You will probably find you only need one thick one. I did this when my cable wouldn't adjust up anymore as a quick fix until the car is off the road for the winter.
