Drive Train Noise

I was driving along enjoying a nicely running car when a noise started. Quite load in any gear. I drove home gently with no problems and the noise settled down but remained. The first thing I checked was gearbox oil. Level correct. I have driven it since. The whine or howl is related to road speed and is the same in any gear. More pronounced on acceleration but is there on deceleration. Disappears if clutch is disengaged. Now thinking diff or propshaft? No vibration. Cannot undo oil plug on diff to check. Any clues anybody?

No change. Are you thinking release bearing? It doesn't seem to have the symptoms that I have heard of.

yes I was, can you record the noise on your phone maybe? could be prop but more likely diff or box.

as for diff level plug a good smack on the end of the torx bit when engaged to the plug sometimes works if you can get at it!!

If the noise goes when clutch is disengaged then that rules out diff and prop shaft.

Is it still there if you pop it out of gear whilst moving, say at around 30 MPH ?

Is it still there if you switch off the engine and cruise at again 30 MPH ? if you try this one be aware that you will soon loose servo assistance to your brakes!!

Ok. Curious! Just took for a run to try out all your lovely suggestions. The noise has all but gone. By the end I think it had gone. One worry to cross off the list. Maybe a bearing somewhere got a bit dry and is now lubricated? Who knows. I will persevere with checking the diff oil. Thanks all as usual for the replies. I'm sure I'll be back soon with another curiosity!

I've just replaced my gear stick gator for one that completely seals the transmission tunnel joint.

It's surprising how much quieter it is in the cabin now. Especially if you were rich enough to have straight cut gearing.

Just check your gator for any splits. Common fault if a car is not used a lot.
