Buyers Guide

HI all,

I'm new to the community and am on the look out for a Pinto powered Robin Hood. I was wondering if there is anything I should be looking out for when searching for a car? I can't seem to find a buyers guide anywhere and I'm not entirely sure what the difference/benefit of each chassis type is.

Can anyone enlighten me? :)

Thanks,

Nic

The car I'm looking at appears to be registered correctly. Is there a way to find out if it's not? I've been using the DLVA Check MOT & Tax site. :)

It also seems to be a Sub-K chassis. Not sure if that's a good thing or not? Is that chassis mild steel?

Sub - K chassis is mild steel. This isn't a problem as long as it's painted to stop corrosion. As said earlier, check very carefully what's actually shown on the log book and if it doesn't say Robin Hood then start asking questions and if necessary put another post on here and get the facts verified.

You've probably already seen this http://nw.rhocar.org/identification.htm

Generally the design of the cars get better as they get newer but ultimately any car is only as good as the builder. Most of the known issues have some sort of tried and tested solution which may already have been implemented.

Thanks for the replies guys! There's a lot to take in for first timers.

Prices also seem to be all over the place. You can get an on the road example for 2500 or some snazzy looking one for 6000+. The one I'm looking at does appear to be registered and is called a Robin Hood on the DVLA site but has no MOT and has been sitting outside for 4 years or so. I'm wanting to get my hands dirty but I don't want to spend over the odds for the pleasure. Not to mention the unknown issues which will arise.

I know it's hard to price a car but what would a 2ltr Pinto powered Sub-K with all mild steel panels (the paint looks like shed paint so will need stripping and re-doing) and no MOT set you back, roughly?

Really enjoying browsing through the forums. So many different engineering solutions! The Robin Hood has soooo much potential!

Thanks again!

Realistically probably between £1500 and £2000 depending on condition. If it's been stood for that long you probably need to factor in replacing discs, pads, tyres etc so maybe have some bargaining power if you're happy to do the work yourself. Remember any car that can't be driven can hid any number of other underlying problems.

Thanks Richy.

That's exactly where I expect it to be priced. Unfortunately, the owner wants quite a bit more. I'll see how my negotiating skills take me.

It's a big risk though even when I am more than happy to do all the work myself.

We will see where this goes. I'll report back! :)

Saw the car, did like it although it has a few issues which would cost money to solve. The chap was very very pleasant but in the end it's worth more to him then it was to me so I had to walk away. It's a shame because it would be great to see it back on the road again. The search continues!
