So just went to start the car up. Lazy to turn over until then nothing. Been out this morning for a long run so battery shouldn't be flat. No lights or anything left on. Had a look round engine and noticed that the alternator was hot. Any ideas? Ford zetec black top. GBS zero.

Hot alternator after engine stoped enough to cool down is almost certainly the diode pack having a short.

Auto electrician should be able to repair, but a new replacement might not cost much more.

So I thought I'd just try something. Reconnected the neg terminal (disconnected earlier to stop alternator getting hot) and the alternator gets hot again. Are you pretty convinced that it'll be the alternator? What else could I check to eliminate anything else?

Thanks.

To be honest I would be pretty chuffed with my self for finding that fault straight away! One of those faults you could spend ages pulling fuses to find the faulty circuit!

Ok, so had the alternator tested today. All working ok. Charged the battery up. Time for some more checks. Gin relay, wiring to alternator etc.

If it's getting hot, something is going on! If the alternator has been tested and the diode pack is okay, what about the 12v ignition feed, is that correctly wired as per however that alternator is meant to be wired through the bulb or however it's meant to be? Could that be permanently receiving a feed for some reason?

Put everything back together and so far everything seems to be ok. Can't fault it now. The only thing I remember doing differently was to try and use the key and turned to the start position instead of using the start button. When I used the key to try and start, obviously it didn't start but the battery warning light goes out so something is maybe still connected.
