  1. Hunty, The full clutch was replaced with a new one in June (not an expensive one admittedly, standard motor factor part), its predecessor had done 3 trips to Barkston and was still intact although highly blackened when removed, this was with the 1600 probably putting out 65bhp at best. I took the car to Barkstone in July and it was given some beans around the track but there was no slipping of the clutch coming the 100 miles back. You say the pedal bites really high, this should be adjustable there could be a little tension in the clutch cable, there is adjustment of sorts in the coupling where the cable enters the bulkhead, it is possible the automatic adjustment has clicked on a tooth and is keeping things slightly tighter meaning you are very slightly riding the clutch, I have read on here where people have removed this particular adjustment which may have been due to a similar issue. When first installed I had a standard clutch cable which was a little short, I fitted the longer 4X4 cable and before fitting the adjustment coupling struggled to disengage gears and the bite was litteraly on the floor. I suggest you reset the clutch cable before doing anything more radical and wasting money, the automatic adjuster is a real pig to get at under the cover on top of the pedal box but can be moved with patience. The options to replace the clutch seemed very limited when I did the swop due to the difference in splines 21 against 23 I think meaning that a 2ltr clutch plate will not fit as suggested above, in fact the contact surfaces are considerably smaller on the 1.6 against 2ltr, I know because we were given the wrong part initially. I guess there must be a high performance 1.6 plate which may help but I really doubt that this is really needed, considering the weight of the car I would expect the car to simply accelerate rather than overload the clutch unless you are on an incline or towing. Listen to the guys, take time to consider the change, you will need to replace the propshaft as well as the 4 speed is shorter, take the car on a good run, go to a show or even better Barkston have a play and then make your mind up, driving fun or economy. Hope you are still enjoying the car Tom Hayden

    Battery For S7

James, The poor start will be the battery, as I said to you they don't like living outside without being used, as it gets colder (and it is) the available power will get less & less. The battery is around 2 years old, the last one didn't last a year and was replaced under warranty after failing in a very similar way, I used to isolate the battery on the remote control but found that the device still has a small current drain which car batteries don't like, this is why I fitted the quick release terminals, if the car was being used regularly (ie during the holidays) I had no problems leaving the battery connected but any extended layup ( and it had a few) always resulted in a flat battery, too many of these and the battery fails anyway. If you give it a boost with a second battery on a cold morning you will see what I mean, it will fire first turn, If as you say you will be using it most days a new battery should last much better but I don't believe you need to invest in anything special. As you have already noted the alternator is fine putting out 14v when running and as you have a spare you should have no risks anyway. The timing was confirmed as being spot on when on the RR, I have checked it since and it was still fine as per the Bestek instructions. Cheers Tom Hayden (looking out the window at a lovely day and feeling depressed)

    S7 For Sale

Thanks to all for the support from everyone @ RHOCAR over the last 4 years. I have just taken a deposit from a man with a big grin on his face and I know exactly how he feels which kind of makes up for the way I feel He is from over Oxford way but I am sure he'll find a warm welcome to the madhouse that this hobby surely is, and I know you guys will be there will be the continued support whenever things go wrong. I have really enjoyed owning my RH for the last 4 years, despite it being slightly dated against the lightweights, 2B's and Zeros there has never been anything but welcomes & support from everyone I have met in this hobby, the mix of personalities, petrol heads and plain nutters is superb and the support from people you have never met unbelievable. I am really sorry to see the car go but the times we are in, dictate what we must do over what we want to do. I know the new owner will enjoy this hobby, it was great to let him go out on a test drive and see within minutes a big grin developing across his face, I new he was sold. Hopefully there will be room for a tin top driver at the shows until things improve and I can either get back on the road or maybe even start a build? Good luck to all for the future, Tom Hayden (XSU976)

    S7 For Sale

Ok, 263 views and only one response from a cissy who doesn't like rain. I am being honest when I say I don't really want to do this but unfortunately family requirements come first, so what's wrong? the price I'm sure, the pictures probably, the spec hope not. Your comments would be appreciated and I won't be offended by criticism if there are no takers on here I understand, but before I go to piston heads or flea bay your advice as always would be appreciated what do I need to change? Cheers, Tom Hayden

    S7 For Sale

Not a great day, It looks like my mid life crisis is to be replaced with a financial crisis so my beloved toy may have to go. This is a 1996 S7 correctly listed on the V5 as a Robin Hood, I bought it 4 years ago and it has served me very well since. I have replaced the original 1600 engine and it now has the following se-tup. 2ltr, 205 block fitted with bike carbs and an FR33 fast road / rally cam, Bike carbs with matched motorbike fuel pump. Bestek electronic ignition set for the FR33 cam. it goes like stink and is certainly faster than I am, Rolling road at Northampton motor sports returned 142bph at the crank with minimal adjustment to the setup (the original engine will be included in the sale as a spare, it was running perfectly just need to catch up with the works apprentice at Barkstone) The drive is through a 4 speed gearbox which give great acceleration when required. As in the pics there is a roof included, not my personal preference as it is like driving a tank backwards but I guess it will be required if you are from the south, northeners will probably just sell it on. The car already had the tie bar replacement for the anti roll bar and I have always found the car to drive really well. If you are reading this then I am sure you already know what you are looking at and looking for so please feel free to PM for any further information. I am looking for £2,950 ovno, I appreciate this might be the wrong time of the year to be putting one of these on the road but believe me it is fun all year around Pictures don't do it justice please contact me for better views. There is a brand new pair of red 3 point harnesses & new mirrors available at additional cost.
  10. I don't mind the 'used' bit its the 'abused' I can't take.
  11. reminder to self, when using a 2ft long torque wrench its easy to do stage 1 & 2 think it through and don't use a 10" slide bar for the 90 degree twist unless your popeye. Heads on & running just the MOT to arrange now. Anyone know how I prove an engine swap was completed correctly? recently replaced the 1.6 with a 2ltr, want to make sure the log book tallies but when on the DVLA site they wanted info on the garage completing the swap, how do you explain its a DIY task?? Tom Hayden
  12. You lot must be mind readers. Just popped inside to check the torque figures as the head's just gone back on and there it is top of the pile, if only you could do a virtual head gasket I wouldn't be covered in oil & muck. Thanks for the data gents. Tom Hayden

    Cam Followers

Help please gents, Removed my camshaft today in order to get the head skimmed tomorrow following a bit of overexertion at Barkston last month (head gasket gave way 5 miles from home, could have been worse) I new I had a noisy follower towards the front but the gaps all appeared OK, on removal found #1 inlet follower well worn, all the rest look fine and the cam profile looks fine. Looked on Burton power site and they appear to be out of stock & £8+ each, found some on fleabay for £28 for a set, the price difference is the concern, can they really be OK? Does anyone have a reccomended supplier, ideally near Luton who may have them available, or should I go to fleabay? The cam is a kent FR33. Cheers, Tom Hayden

    Clutch

I have to agree with this one, fitted a 4X4 cable for the length and then found the outer was too long, made up a simple adjustable spacer with some conduit couplings, bushes & a locking ring. 20mm bush received the plastic sleeve nicely, wound the bush out until slack was gone & locked off with a locking ring simples.
