Fitting Wipers For Mot

If you have been running with-out wipers/washers you are very lucky to get away with-out being pulled by plod --- or worse --- involving some other innocent in your accident due to not being able to see. You deserve to be beaten with a stick of soggy rhubarb!!

On the plus side -- obtain a mini wiper motor & gear ( must be 2 speed ) & any style/make of washer & fit ---- quickly.

You could fit an aero screen and Wear a helmet which is what some people do to get through the sva test. I presume this is what has been done to your car. That way you wouldn't have to worry about washers and wipers. Personally I found it windy enough as it is with a full screen so I would follow florins advice. My rhubarb seems to be a bit lack lustre this year so you are safe from me!

Don't think we should be encouraging avoidance action on such a safety critical item, Richard. If he decided to run with a screen & no wipers after IVA its likely screen would go back after an MOT; though the test station may ( hopefully ) refuse a pass.

I have to admit, I don't normally like nanny-state interference but having a windscreen without wipers is dodgy. I got caught in the rain a few weeks ago (started out a sunny day with no rain forecast) and my wipers weren't working - I had 20 very tricky miles peering round the screen to see ahead.

I always assumed the wind blast would blow the water off the screen but it doesn't at all.

It does if you use Rain-X on the screen :-) Ive driven several miles in pouring rain in my Superspec and found I rarely needed to use my wipers at speed. Air speed does keep the screen pretty clear.

i modified he original sierra setup but it was a bit of work as i had to change the pivot point of the one arm to adjust the sweep. The mini system seems a simpler way to go.

The other thing i did which you may want to do is make short wiper blades. I used the new single piece type wiper and cut them down to 6inches. They work pretty well. I used ones for the front windscreen but i have seen on modern cars that they do a smaller version for the rear windscreen which may be even better as the springing won't be as strong.

I used my sierra wiper arms cut down and welded the U shape on so i can use normal fittings rather than having to screw it on etc. That way i can carry a spare that i can easily swap if needed.

I've had to commute for the past month in my 2b as my normal car is out of action. So my wipers have come into use quite a few times. They are well worth it and as said above a must have safety item. You are in a tiny little car without ABS, traction control, DSC, air bags and sip so anything you can do to stay safe is worth doing.

Just be add another thing into the mix is your windscreen laminated? i suspect not as mine isn't it's just toughened. If it breaks you will get showered in glass although it shouldn't be sharp. I ALWAYS wear sunglasses or clear safety specs but i am going to put some of the antishatter plastic film on the inside to hold it together in an accident. Its only about £5-10

I put a screen and wipers on a couple of years ago. Went for mini system on eBay as GBS were a bit pricey. It wasn't a quick job, hints on this blog were very helpful but beware your screen position may be unique to your car so there's a lot of trial and error positioning the wipers themselves and they had to be cut to size. Used a basic CBS washer bottle kit which was the easier part, but measure up your space for the bottle first as there are size options. The elation at getting an MOT pass was pathetically worth it though, best of luck !

If you opt to remove screen for a quick hit MOT don't forget to mount your wing mirrors somewhere.
