This explains why the manufacturers of kits are looking at hybrid. Struggling to see how they can afford to do it though! Hopefully you will still be able to go for age related or q plate just means there will be no new reg's possible.

Far too many questions and lack of detail.

Who pays for homecharging? It is part of the car purchase or will then become standard equipment in houses? What about the places without a parking space, or street parking is the only option and highly contested? What are the government going to do about the infrastructure?

To me, its a ridiculous statement. None of those in power in government are likely to still be there when 2040 comes around so who cares about detail?

Need to start disassembling a prius...
Although splicing those power cables and hacking the firmware would be a challenge...

Perhaps Musk/Telsa will offer his battery/drivetrain solution as off the shelf components - can someone invite him to Stoneleigh and get him hooked :)

Kit market/amateur build will be killed off when amateur builders burn their house down or fry themselves playing with electric vehicles. There's a reason JLR send you on a EV awareness course before you're even allowed within 5 metres of one! lol

Exactly - I'm sure it will happen but add at least 20 years on to that figure. They're only announcing this because France said the same thing a few weeks ago and France are political flavours of the month right now as they're about the only people that Trump hasn't insulted (on Twitter, of course) and they've got a young, good-looking president 8)

As Richard said, there will just be hybrid/electric kit cars - GBS just got a £2m grant to develop a hybrid/electric kit car so it's started already.

Has any of our members yet converted an RH to electric or hybrid?

Could be an interesting project to take on, anyone interested??

Getting Musk onboard would be a plus, maybe a twitter/facebook/?? invitation is in order!!

True, task a private enterprise, they aim to hike profits, government tax said company. No cost but all the money!

How many times have you electrocuted yourself Richard? lol. I've done that more than I've doused myself in petrol and caught fire :p haha.

There already is, Westfield/Potenza Sports cars made an electric version a good 6/7 years ago and also in collaboration with Warwick University, made a hybrid too back in 2010: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/mediacentre/wmgnews/?newsItem=094d43cd295b02f701298d2008965d6f

GBS are way behind the times :p lol. Shame neither really took off though, hence I feel this is going to be more a publicity stunt for GBS rather than added kit line up....

So we have just less than 30years to convert to hybrid. Lucky i got my wife a phev..would it be possible to hybridize my Elan i wonder??

Anyway a little synical on my behalf, but how would air polution control measures go towards the Militarys current range of Armourd vehicles. My last tank had a 22ltr twin turbo engine. The generator was on a 2.2ltr too. Cant imagne the motors needed to replicate the torque output let alone the generators needed to power it.

Sounds like a knee jerk reaction to me.

Thats all I see GBS doing. Flat floor, load of batteries, either a motor through a gearbox so conventional rear end or just motor in the rear and batteries filling the engine bay. Not £2million worth of work needed ;)

So, looks like from 2040 you won't be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car in the uk. have to wonder what this might mean for registering kit cars.

best hurry up and get mine finished then

So who's going to pay for all the new power stations that have to be build and running in the next 23 years? How are they going to be powered? Nuclear? Coal? Gas? Not exactly clean are they?

how will they replace all the fuel tax they currently get? Tax batteries? Tax electric more?

Children will be put to work on giant hamster wheels. This not only produces electricity but also reduces childhood obesity. Win-win, no?

We wont need cars by then HS2 might be up and running...that will solve all the UK's travel issues =@ :give_rose:

right over the top of my in-laws house cutting my village in 2 best of all it not even high speed just a regular low speed spur off the hs2. that's an even bigger pile *bleep*e than all electric cars

At 94 years old in 2040 I will be very happy if still driving, wont care what.

Go back to steam power & burn what-ever will burn.

I'll be 86 just having a pulse by then will be a bonus!!!!

If the equation E=Mc2 is solved by then there will be ample free energy around (is there an echo in here!)
