Theres alot of guys running bmw engines in kitcars these days. Ive been looking at the possibility of fitting a bmw v8 and manual box into my robinhood. Engines im looking at are the early 1990s dohc non vanos types.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M60

Or if i can the latter model.

Can anyone with a bmw engine advise on pros cons etc. Also im assuming as the Rover v8 fits then it wont be massive issue to fit in an S7 bay.

Ta all

DOHC engines are much wider than the ohv rover v8, so might be a problem fitting it in.

A greater issue might be fititng the gearbox in, the type 9 is quite modestly sized, and the tunnel is designed to suit.

I've just googled some images of the BMW V8 M60 engine and I can't imagine that squeezing into a RH!

My RV8 has at most an inch clear either side at the front where the car narrows and I can only fit the engine in the car with the engine in a part-assembled state (you have to finish building the engine once it's in the car)

Yea i understand its big. My thinking is i wanted to do something a bit different. If a cosworth v6 quad cam can fit then surely an 8 can do too..!! Hoping it will. Tunnel not an issue as i can fit a new one. Seats will be small tho so ill lay of the pies

Ill have to do some measuring, The plan is to do something different. Im not aware wether s7 needs mods to pass iva so im looking at a trackday toy. Idea behind bmw would be to buy the whole car so i have all running gear and its not badly priced these days. Sell the spare bits. For those unaware ill be using my spare Elan plus 2 chassis as a base and mate the hoodie body to it. Some fabrication may need to be done but im confident it could work.

It is a backbone but it can with minor mods take a T5 or MT75. Rovers have been fitted too. Like the idea of vr6, The Elan actually has a suprising amount of space above the frame which makes it suitable for v configs. Historicaly a 2.0 slant 4 was fitted as a trial prior to the eclats development. A kawasaki 1400 bike engine is also on the wanted / wish for list.

The BMW V8's run a large angle on the cylinder banks making them very wide, even my m3 engine is cantered over A hell of a lot making it very very wide.

The BMW V8's wont fit in the marlin chassis which in comparison dwarfs the s7. However same scenario the rover V8's will fit, the BMW v8s won't.

In perspective my m3 engine fills every bit of my marlins engine bay, my mate runs a rover V8 in his marlin and there is plenty of room.

They are great engines...up sides are really good documentation and manuals online for rebuilding down sides are wiring can be a nightmare (ask me I know!!!) and expensive parts when things go wrong... also BMW seem to chuck out the normal rule book and do things their own way. Which can be fustrating sometimes!!

Spent a few more hours looking around, volvo 4.4 v8 looks a good choice. 60° v config so not as wide but a little taller, just about the same as honda vetec in height. Incidently its same as Noble used too, good pedegree perhaps.
