Hi, I have the chance of a complete mx5.

What I would like to know is, will the engine and box fit into my 2b?

Has anyone done this mod before? Any help will be appreciated.

There are mx5 based kits out there so its been done before although on Zeros, MEVs, Westfields, roadrunners etc. Im not sure about the 2B though.

The knowledge is out there on this forum and others no doubt. Id say that if youre looking to use the engine and box it might be worth looking at the diff etc too incase the rotational drive is different.

Has your car already gone through the IVA or older SVA, or are you looking at a rolling chassis stage.

There are a few pinto and gearboxes on eBay but they are around £600.

Try a search for mx5 on here and see what you can find.

If you have a complete car I'd be tempted to transfer over as much as possible including loom, ecu and switchgear to keep it as trouble free as possible and not a ford Mazda hybrid

I think apart from engine and gearbox mount and possible diff mount fabrication it shouldn't be too difficult providing you are fairly competent or know people that are.

Look for the zero Mazda based cars for your Inspiration. Find a good blog.

Hope this helps

Dave

I'd be tempted to keep the ford diff as the mazda one would be difficult to mount (very wide mounting points ) but the engine and box shouldn't be too much trouble it will n eed new mounts fabricating and as Dave says change the whole loom. Great motor much lighter than the ford

You will need a new propshaft and do away with the torque tube

im fitting an mx5 1.8vvt and box into my 2b/4- sub k (not quite sure on model) im keeping the sierra diff to save modding the rear suspension.

i've basically bought the entire mx5 removed all engine and box components, full loom, fuel tank, steering column, battery, switches etc and sold the rest im pretty much even on it now. did only buy the mx5 for 350 though.

Hi Dave,it was last on the road in 2010.

I have just bought it minus the engine and find the ford ohc hard to source

Is this the Exmo from Sutton in Ashfield? I was going to buy it & put a MX5 in, only concern was the size of the bellmouth in the tunnel, but not insurmountable.

The exmo has a tuned redtop in it. The owner was selling it separately for about 4K

Have been playing around with engine position and it definitely fits in the 2B with no chassis mods required. Alternator will need to move over to other side of engine to make room for steering shaft and sump will need to be shortened.

Floor mounted pedal box will probably work best.

I have been making steady progress with installing the MX5 engine and gearbox in my 2B.

Prop shaft has been modified.

Engine and gearbox mounts are done.

Sump has been shortened

Exhaust manifold has be modified

Floor mounted pedal box made utilising the MX5 pedals etc.

Now starting to work on the wiring and fuel system.
