I look to yourr good selves for assistance again.

Zetec black top 2 litre

Two piccies attached;-

Looking at the offside of the unit

Pic 1 shows the air filter on the left,

Fuel rail? running from the centre of the frame off to the left beyond the filter.

Pic 2looking down on the fuel rail

I hope I have got the terminology correct, I grew up with Carb based fuel system and at 67 this is my first brush with fuel injection.

My question is this.....The thing on the end of the fuel rail that the fuel inlet hose attaches to that looks somewhat like a top hat.

What is it's purpose and can I simply remove it by undoing the two bolts on the end of the fuel rail without having any critical parts fall out on the floor/ into my hand.

I need to access the bolt that can be seen just behind the top hat thing in order to fit new top alternator bracket

Your assistance, as always ,will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not savvy with that particular fuel rail but I'm fairly sure that is the fuel pressure regulator; quite a critical part of your fuel system as it regulates the fuel pressure to your injectors. You should be fine removing it from the end of the fuel rail, but expect some fuel loss and be wary of any residual pressure and spray (unlikely if it's been turned off for a while, but I mention it for clarity)
