I went through this when I changed the wheels on my car. I have to say that R & R alloys were brilliant inhelping me through the process print off the measuremants sheets do the measures then talk to them on the phone they were the best

If keeping rim width the same, then you will be able to increase offset (smaller number) by as many mm as there are from the wheel rim to the outer edge of the arch.

 

So if you had

 

17x7 wheels

ET30

10mm from wheel rim to outer edge of arch

 

You could go to

 

15x7

Et20

and the wheel rim would be flush with the arch.

I had 205x15 xet15 on mine. Still had enough space to go fatter tyre.

Bought some advertised on here ex race tyres. Good price and very good tyres.

I went down to 195 tyres and found the ride much better, less breaking away on damp corners and much easier turning effort.

Whatever et or how deep dish you go, I would recommend to stay at 195 width.
