Insomnia...almost

Well I'm awake at 3;10...after 2;45 hrs of sleep...strange things pop in and out of your head.

There are a plethora of posts on here about wooden brake pedal syndrome....and more than a few solutions offered by those with more cranial capacity then I.

However, it behoves me,( in the thirst for knowledge), to ask the obligatory silly question.

I need to attack my bleeding awful brakes and am fairly sure at some point I will have to change the master cylinder. I am currently unable to view this item as it's hidden behind a mass of aluminium.

if it's an 85 sierra MC are the threads for the pipes metric. If I have to swap and utilise a Ford Ka MC then I assume Ford will have gone Metric my the mid 90's....

sorry, I'm used to working on VW Beetles...self explanatory

As usual thanks for any offers of advice

Pads & shoes are from the donor Sierra on Florin ( cheap-skate I hear ) & master cylinder is Ford Ka -- the only small problem was the mounting angles of the M/C -- Ka is less angle so needed a tapered wedge made -- brakes are fine but need firm foot pressure to lock the front wheels.

Threads are all M10 fine pitch I believe.

I can beat that for being a cheap-skate mine brakes are from the donor from 20 years ago and have never been replaced, car stops well on Sierra m/c and no servo. I tend not to use the brakes they just slow you down.

I've come across some absolutely terrible brake pads in my time! One customer had cheap ebay ones, and one stop from 60mph and they started to fade and stink, I found this out on road test via a sharp bend! I seem to remember him thinking they were rubbish, but never said anything to me (they never do!). Everything was working as it should as i'd just stripped and cleaned them all. Fitted some motor factor ones (happened to be ferodo) and the brakes were excellent again. Scary thing is it would pass MOT fine, as there isn't usually any heat in them when tested at low speed on the rollers.

Another guy had a set of green stuff pads, he was a mad driver though to be fair, used to eat a set every year without fail, and one time he called me, one of the wheels locked when hot. Not under heavy braking, but gentle braking! I never did figure out the cause as he just wanted replacements and it wasn't worth his time chasing EBC up. I drove through a 30 zone and touched the brakes and the wheel locked solid, tyre smoke everywhere. Again, brakes free, calipers in working order etc. Replaced with new, all good again!

anyway rant over, but worth checking out the pads before condemning other parts for sure! and if running a servo it's worth checking that works as they would in an mot pumping it hard then starting car with foot on pedal to check assistance happens as vacuum builds up etc.

+1 Mintex 1144s.

They work well on the road with a servoless system,

and are also excellent on the track.

a few 30 minute track slots driven hard at Brands didnt make them fade.

Bog standard vented disks & calipers & a tandem MC from Rally Design.

The brake techy at RD swore that combination wouldnt work,

but for an old geezer who drove cars with rod operated brakes a hard pedal

is no problem at all.

You'd be surprised how hard a frightened man can push a brake pedal..... :(

Thanks for your comments and advice chaps......having hunted the interwebbyblobbything .... £63 a side seems to be the average for the Sierra....can't put a price on safety...

I will have to see how many pennies I have in my retirement Jam jar...

Priority's you see......looks like my new steering wheel just turned into a bid on "evil bay" for someone's cast off....That's after ...alternator plus plus plus.

Still I would rather be alive to admire my current steering device than the alternative. IE parked in the back of a white van man's ride.

Thank's once again
