Smell Of Fuel

Had the zero some time and Ive noticed a smell of fuel in the garage a few times. This week its been sat with a full tank and it smells quite strong. There is no smell in the boot when I lift the cover, but as I have the center consol out to replace the speed sensor after the last one met its fate when it hit the prop, the smell is strong in the garage. It seems to be emendating from there. I can find no wet spots etc but havent searched too much yet. Is there a common place to look such as breathers etc?

One job leads to another with a kit huh. Got some nice quality leather to retrim whilst its apart, and Im going to get new seat runners and 5 point harnesses because I dont like 4 point ones without anti submarine seats. Wonder whats next...

Try the fuel tank breather. This should be looped down from the tank and the terminate higher than the highest point the fuel can be filled to.

if the loop has fuel in it the air lock can expand when in a location where the temperature is higher than when the tank was filled (in a garage). Any excess will then be pushed out and drop from where the pipe ends.

I have had this problem with many engine situations, especially on sealed applications mainly chainsaws etc. These have a 1 way valve fitted so that only air can go in not fuel out. I have a 1 way valve fitted to mine but I know a lot of the car applications don't as the hose often goes a lot higher than the tank can be filled, a situation that is almost impossible with these kit cars.

1 way valves are available via ebay etc. but you will need to know the hose diameter.

I had the identical situation where the smell was strongest in the tunnel. Turns out the connection between the red/yellow pipes that came from the tank and the much bigger green ones that went to the engine were faulty. There was no insert in the thinner pipe so tightening up the clips simply squashed them.

Exactly the sort of reply I was hoping for thanks. Some where to start al lease.

I also know some standard cars run a small expansion bladder and a solenoid valve that only opens with ignition as a breather. Also shuts it you go shiny side down.

If you get the proper SAE-rated newer stuff it's fine (sorry, can't be arsed to walk into the shed and drag a length out to find it's rating right now!), but a lot of the older/cheaper rubber injection hose suffers what you describe. Buy from a trusted hose supplier who know what they're doing, or use PTFE lined/braided hose.

edit: found a build photo :) SAE J30R9 (or R7 for return lines)
