First Proper Trip - Ride Height Problems / Remote Oil K Series Engine

Recommended Posts

Went for our (girlfriend and I) first proper hol on the weekend, was supposed to stay at Youth hostel in Brecon but got scuppered by their drive.(Rang them first and explained the problem, never mind.) The car performed brilliantly other than giving me a sore knee due to not enough leg room for me, did want to fit test the newly fitted hood, but also glad I did't get the opportunity.

My main problems are filter/sump, from reading the forums I will be acquiring a 420 sump/pickup but was wondering about the remote oil kits. There is one on eBay by mocal, but wasn't sure what they are like. Can't seem to see anyone else comment on here. I was going for braided hoses and the 90degree pickup.

Are the hoses going to be ok? Read somewhere that I could blow the hoses off with high pressure? Is this a real concern or an unfortunate experience for someone?

Other kit I found was on a site where they fitted the k series rover engine to a morris minor, kit looks a bit better but a lot more expensive.

Anyone have any experience of these.

I also want to use the adjustable suspension on the super spec to lift front and rear but assume the suspension re set up won't be cheap?

400 miles down, sneaked up to 4000rpm couple of times (tunnel near monmouth, was with a lotus evora....you just have to don't you ;) ) looking forward to getting the engine run in!

Ta for any thoughts

What engine do you have? you say K series then talk about a 420 sump

The 420 used a 2.0 T series engine that was used in ithe superspec?

If you have a T series engine just fit a shorter filter - no need for remote

Just found the list of filters in that post and it was a reply to another post from you on the same subject, if you realy want a remote filter kit I have one you can have for £45-00 + PP, I bought this before I found shorter filters OR SPEND £5.99 on a new filter

Hi,

Sorry for not being clear! Yep it's in a Super spec, it's the 2l non turbo engine (little sketchy on which one exactly - still on a very steep learning curve about different models / part sources. Fairly sure its the K series engine). From what I can read from the forums, the 420 sump is shorter / wider so same oil volume. Can't find the original post, but this was in it illustrating the different sumps:

I have the black sump (think it's off the 820?)

I got hold of the shorter filter mentioned in other posts the Hengst H90W29 but its the same size as existing filter (9.5cm) is this the wrong one? Haven't been able to find what size it should be. Went to Unipart and the guy said that the filter resolved to this one eventually.

I was leaving epic divets in the road in some places apparently :(

Cheers

Ed

Yep tis me!!! From the link, the replacement filter is 93mm, which is the same as mine mine so not going to help....unless I just need to look harder for a shorter filter!!! How big is yours?!

Thanks

Looking at the picthe filter is the same level as the sump, is the bell housing lower? if so (or the same) you have the short sump.

Just been out in my fluffy slippers and my filter is about 85-95mm but is above (just) the level of the sump and they are (just) above the level of the bell housing, If they are all level that is the best you will get without lifting the engine, jacking up the suspension.

Time for new front suspension and a sump gaurd

Ta for looking. My sump is the lowest part, with filter a close second. The bell housing has more clearance than sump. Am sure the car is standard from robin hood, so assume the original big sump.....going to measure it then off to my local breakers to check height of 420 sump and see if I can get a benefit....then back to remote filter kit! Which one did you get?

Def need a sump guard, have seen a nice looking one in metal tread plate which I plane to emulate on the forum during my trawling.

The superspec appears to have adjustable front suspension (8 holes on wishbone) I was planning on lifting ride height by changing between 2nd lowest to 2nd highest setting then get geometry re adjusted, as assume this change would change camber etc to help too.

Ta

Guest mower man

By putting a sump gaurd on you will make the prob worse!!! adjust all four spring seats to raise ride height to give 3.5/4 " under sump and 4/4.5" under diff and you should be ok under normal situations just try to be observant and be off the brakes well before a recumbent copper HTH mower man

Hi Ed,

Looking at the pic in post #9 it looks like you have the shorter sump (some superspecs came with an engine for a 420) like all things RH different things were fitted to the same model cars it all depended what they had at the time.

The 93mm filter is just shorter than the shorter sump, the filter that came with the kit was 25mm ish longer.

In the picture it looks like the front of the sump is lower than the back or is it just the angle of the photo?

Is the front engine mount doing it's job.

Keeping the bottom of the shockers close to the hub is the recommended way as you could (not will) bend a bottom wishbone, to gain ride height wind up the spring seats.

As mower man says a sump guard will take away some of the clearance but when you know you are going to hit something I would rather it be the Guard, and you will never get 3.5 - 4" under the sump on the superspec without the bottom wishbones sitting at a stupid angle.

The Zimmer shocks are just not up to the job and when I changed mine after only a few miles they were totally Knackered.

Was the sump guard made from tread plate in a photo that was taken with the car held up on fork lifts?

Will this change the geometry and require Camber/toe in etc re setting?

Thanks
