Hello,

Can anybody advise on the best way to straighten copper brake/fuel pipe. I have seen some tools around but they are £45 each and need a different one for each diameter of pipe.

Thanks

Is this on or off the car and how bad are the bends?

If it's off the car and you want to straighten coils of new pipe before you use it, then roll it between 2 sheets of plywood.

If its on the car then either straighten it carefully by hand or if it's badly bent, just replace it. Personally I wouldn't re-bend all copper brake pipes because of the possibility of damaging it and having the pipe fail.

Hi,

Sorry I should have been clear, I am replacing all the brake pipes for new on my build, and the pipe has obviously been delivered in a coil, so not currently fitted to the car. I will try your idea with the plywood, thanks!

The tool Bob showed you is a good one for straightening or bending pipe to shape on or off the car. Also item 161436978155 from eBay is the tool I have found best to form flares on the end of the pipe on or off the car. I have even found it better than professional hydraulic tools I used to use at a mail truck dealership.

The cheep tools really are crap.

The better pipe to use is the copper plated sink. It might be harder to shape but you have no vibration hardening problems so it lasts much longer when used correctly.

If the pipe is not yet cut to size:

- hold one end in a vice

- grip the other end with a pair of mole grips or the like

- Sharp crack with a hammer onto the moles = one staight pipe

This works a treat on coppper.
