Q Plate For Easier Mot?

Reading the pinned thread about MOT emission tests, it would seem to me that having a Q plate will make the MOT a piece of cake.

Even though I hope to qualify for a new plate, can I opt for a Q plate and ensure simple MOT tests in the future? Or is it not that simple?

Yes, you could opt for a Q plate but if you're in a position to IVA and register on a new registration, why would you?

New reg would mean meeting the strictest emissions for IVA anyway, so why would subsequent MOT's be a problem. Also consider that a car on a new reg will always be worth more than one on a Q plate (and no,I've got nothing against Q plates in principal but there is still some stigma attached to them)

Q plate would also stop you getting a private plate if you or future buyers wanted one.

I am with you on mot,s though.

You might want to vastly change your engine or tune your existing one. That is when problems could come to light.

I thought I'd read that emission tests at IVA were not as strict as an MOT?

I ask this because there is a thread on the GBS forum of owners struggling to get through the MOT - you have to fit a lambda sensor and get a special emissions map for the ECU which isn't quite sorted yet etc, etc.

I'm not bothered about resale value...can i choose an age-related plate? For example, I'm getting a 'new' Zetec engine which could only have been built about 2004. Could i request an 04 plate, maybe?

You will only be able to get an age related plate if using a certain number of parts from a doner vehicle this will be demonstrated by submitting with your application for registration the V5 of the doner and a declaration of the parts used (certain steps omitted for clarity).

Since you will be using new parts or parts from an unknown source a new reg or a q plate are your only options.

If you choose a new reg it will require a cat to be fitted, vehicles that are required to have a cat on registration (ie new reg, not Q or age related plate before 1992) will now (since 2014) not pass an MOT without a cat being fitted even if they can pass the full cat emissions test at MOT.

As far as I'm aware GBS have a silencer with a cat fitted so the look is not compromised.
