Exhaust Rear Mounting

This actually comes under the heading of "stating the bleeding obvious" (in fact Ian might recall us discussing it at Stoneleigh), but thought I would share it anyway in case anyone else gets caught.

The exhaust on my Superspec regularly starts blowing at the manifold/exhaust join and I had figured out it was because there was no central support so that all the engine vibration/movement was transmitted through the pipe and straining the joint. I happened to be visiting Richard Stewart last week to pick up some spare parts and talked to him about it. He pointed out that the rear exhaust mounting was direct from exhaust to chassis whereas it should be rubber mounted.

So a quick change:

BEFORE AFTER

It remains to be seen if the next exhaust fix lasts any longer but what I wasn't expecting was the DRAMATIC decrease in the noise level. The car almost whispers along now compared with how she used to be. I assume the car was acting as a sounding board before the change.

As I said, probably obvious to all of you, but it wasn't to me or the previous owner

Hi Alan ,when I fitted the big repackable can on my s7 I decided to mount the thing front and rear to the tub and insert a flexi between the manifold and the can it cures 99% of the probs of loosening joints cracked manifolds etc, have had few probs since will dig out some pics regards mick

My silencer was held on by one exhaust bobbin at the rear after a thousand miles ended up with a cracked silencer,so i would love to see some pictures of how to add an extra mount to the exhaust.

Thanks.

Hi All,

resurrecting an old thread, but I had my rubber fail last week !!

The top metal is glued to the rubber, and that's where it failed.

I think this is off an engine mount? any idea which one?

I was thinking about drilling through the rubber, and then running a threaded old which is loosely fixed (using a loc nut)

Thoughts?

Cheers

Ed

As I started this thread I might as well add my recent experience to it. As you will see from the first post, my cat/silencer had been mounted direct to the chassis, with no bobbin, for 7 years and 9000 miles with no problem, but I was persuaded to change the solid rear mount to the rubber bobbin. Seemed logical and it did improve the noise level and it stopped the continual failing of the manifold/exhaust joint. As I said at the time, it was a 'bleeding obvious' improvement,

Well, one year on and 2,500 miles later my cat and silencer have both shaken their internals to bits and need to be replaced. So maybe it wasn't so obvious after all :) Luckily Jeremy (jmspec) has stepped up and saved my bacon. (It's been said before but it does no harm in repeating it, this Club and it's members are amazing)

So now I shall do what I should have done a year ago and listen to the wise old heads of Mick and Bob and mount the cat/silencer at both ends and fit a flexible joint,

Just remember though the bobbin needs to be in compression not tension or it will fail regularly. Also bee wary of the flexi pipes. Some are very restrictive, drops of 60% in BHP are not uncommon amongst the cheaper end of the market.

Be interested in how you do mount your exhaust when you do? Do you have a link to an example of the flexi pipe, never seen one!

What were the symptoms of your dead cat / silencer?

Cheers for the feedback on the bobbin - makes sense.
