Right, im 16 and doing AS levels at the moment, and most people know what they want to do after school, i dont.....

i dont know what career path to go down or what different options there are as far as careers go

been asked what i like, obvious answer is cars but other than a kwik-fit mechanic and a car designer what other jobs are there?

this got me thinking what do you all do? what career/job?

kinda vague but thanks anyway :)

I'm a Quantity Surveyor.

It involves the financial control of building contracts.

The percurement of specialist sub-contract trades.

Contract law.

And you have to have knowlage of the construction process as well.

More importantly it pays well once you have gained the experience.

If you fancy it just speak to your local building college or rimg around your local main contract builders.

Mark.

Business Advisor helping small to medium sized businesses develop management systems to increase efficiency, reduce scrap and errors. I also design environmental and health and safety management systems. After a few years in a larger practice I now run my own business. Used to be a General Manager in an Electronics sub contract manufacturer.

In the old days I used to call myself a Management Consultant but people spat on me and posted silly jokes on websites about not knowing the difference between a sheep and a dog. ;)

I'm a Product Designer & have had such useful titles as Technical Manager, Product Development Manager, etc...

One thing I will say.. unless you want to sell cars or fix cars or wash cars it's a surprisingly hard area to get into.... Perhaps paul mercer might give you some pointers though as I know he works for Ford or one of it's underlings...

Money. Our trainees are on about £10,000 at 18

An experienced QS names his own price :D

I'm a Draughtsman. I use Computer Aided Design software, mostly AutoCad to draw just about anything customers ask me to. I have drawn everything from Battleships, Oil Rigs, Cars, Yachts, Chemical Plants, Houses, Nuclear Power Stations etc. etc.

Getting started is difficult, but once you are in the groove there's plenty of work. 3D automotive design pays well, CATIA etc.

AutoCad is easy to learn and it's the standard CAD system in the U.K. Want to know more?

As you know Dr Fox I'm a mature older student studying BEng in Motor Sport Engineering, carears available after graduation are wide and varied.

Suprisingly the course has one of the highest 'fail to finish' rates of all the courses run by the university!

When I asked why, I was suprised at the answer, most of our students take a year out to go on an industrial placement between year two and three and never come back as the companies they work for make them an 'offer they can not refuse'.

We have had guys and gals for that mater gon on to work for as diverse as JCB and TVR as well as Rolce Royce and a number of racing teams as well.

Prior to going to join the ranks of the 'un-washed' I was a computer networks hardware engineer this involved going into various companies and schools and designing an infrastructure to connect all there IT equipment together in a fast and efficient manner, even though they rarely needed it or understood what they could do.

Also I and one or two others on here are memebers of Her Majesty's Finest, which worries the hell out of Big Jim!!!!

PS Mark Mate are you coming round tomorrow (Friday) ??

As i've been mentioned, i though i'd better put my tuppence worth in.

I work for Ford Motor Company at their Research and Engineering center in Basildon, Essex. We do a whole host of things here, from design, prototyping, testing of prototypes.... the list goes on. I actually build prototype components for testing.

I joined Ford as an apprentice, doing a 4 yr course. After that i was sent to where i am now, to build kit cars. OOps sorry, i meant prototype cars and components. I'm not sure if the scheme is the same now as it was when i joined, but the best way to find out would be to contact ford directly and ask.

Don't have a number i'm afraid, but i think it would be at the Trafford House site.

Ford customer services may be able to help.

Engineering and project manager for a food company producing soya milk (Alpro). Mostly clerical work but I still get the opportunity to get stuck in with the physical work from time to time. Interesting, varied, challenging and bloody hard work, with long hours. Wouldn't want to do anything else.

Everything we use in work is stainless steel, so the car never lets me forget what pays for it. Pay can be good for right company.

QS's are a rare breed now with less new blood coming through. So we can ask for even more as companies fight for us. Wee thats what happened for me just before Christmas. :D :D :D

Before being made redundant :gdit: :boohoo: just before Christmas I used to be a Production/Process/project Engineer and continuous improvement facilitator (improving processes, reducing waste etc, probably similar to the service bear offers) good fun but usually the first to be laid off when the money runs out.

They money can be good but most people won't have a clue what you do, say mechanical engineer and they think you fix cars for a living.

I would definatly go down the soliciter route, I have a couple of friends who are soliciters and they get paid she loads and enjoy their work.

Bruce,

PS If anyone knows of Engineering jobs within 40 miles of Swindon please let me know, I could do with as many leads as possible........

I did a Btec in electronics and telecomms and followed it with HND all payed for by a company and now i have 4 pc's and a unix workstation and i manage a couple of data networks for the Highways Agency cameras, matrix boards and road side phones data not the actuall phones and end bits thats somone elses problems every day is diffrent some more exciting than others. knowing what i know you would be amazed it works at all.

my advice find somthing you can do every day to pay the bills, save cars as your hobby other wise you may begin to hate them i certainly dont go home and surf the net. by home time ive had enough of computers. but thats my view. hope you find somthing you like.

a man who finds a job he truely enjoys will never work another day in his life.

what sort of stuff do you do during you day?

Easier to show you rather than explain.

Take a look at our website www.jwssolutions.com on there you will also see a link to my own Bear-Racing site in the 'It's not all work' page.
