Converting To Lpg

Hi all,

Considering having the wife's car converted to lpg, with the tank, one of those donut style that goeas where the spare wheel is. Underslung not an option really, as when the jeep gets older I want to do a bit of off roading.

Unsure though, on how the law stands on having no spare wheel, not that the wife would attempt to change the wheel if she had a flat, not that she couldn't, its just it would be a pain unloading the children, taking out the child seats to get at the jack etc which are under the back seat, and then unloading the boot to get at the spare.

Anyone done this or looked into it?

Cheers

Mark

I had my R/Rover converted a few years ago and payed about 32 pence a ltr well worth it, as to the spare i don't think it is against the law not to carry one only in certain European countries.

Best thing to do is have each tyre injected with that anti puncture stuff, i think it self seals minor punctures or carry some tins of the same type of stuff, most new cars in this country don't have a spare anyway only a few tins of the repair gunk.

Sorry about calling it stuff as i don't know what it is called.

I think the green stuff is called green gunk, particularly popular with motorcyclists who cant afford a fast blowout. It makes a mess of inside the tyre though.

I have no spare with the kitcar and just carry a can of tyre weld

two new cars that dont have spare wheels are the mini one (comes with compressor and tyre weld) lotus elise has special bracket in boot to hold can of tyre weld + front and back wheels are different sizes so i think you are ok with no spare!!!

It's totally legal to drive without a spare (you don't even need tyre weld etc in it's place, but it's a good idea to carry some!)

The only rule is that if you do carry a spare, it needs to be road legal/worthy

As an aside, I believe having a directional tyre on your spare is technically illegal, as it showns intent to run a tyre in the wrong direction! (Maybe Enforcer/Dredd can clarifly?)

i converted a isuzu trooper a few years back and we took out the petrol tank and in the space the original petrol tank fitted we fitter a cylindrical tank and made a custom made smaller petrol tank to fit around it and fitting the available space.

it did not hang down any lower that the original tank and it all worked out sweet as nut. mind it was a bit of work but was worth it.

When I was looking into doing my jeep I'm sure there were some good under car tanks for jeeps newer than 98 so you can keep the spare and not loose to much clearence , Pre 98 you loose a good 4inchs off the back end. Well worth doing pay back on the lpg kit is pretty quick on a jeep mine paid for it self in about 6 months.

One thing to bear in mind is the tank can only hold 80% of it's volume.

There's no problem with the law about having a spare wheel or not (but enforcer will confirm or not) the big problem comes when you get a puncture. Unless you're only going slow, or it's a slow puncture that creeps up on you, you can forget the cans of goo! I've NEVER know a puncture that's occured on the motorway get fixed with the goo, the tyre usually gets damaged too much with the distance you actually have to drive on it just to stop, so is impossible to reinflate with the goo.

What's more, check with your recovery company, I do know that the AA will only recover vehicles without spare wheels, if that was the "standard build" of that model of car. In other words, if it came out of the factory like that.

So if you've had you vehicle converted to run on LPG, and therefore no longer carry a spare wheel, the AA will NOT attend to you for a puncture problem. I'm not sure about the others, I think the RAC will, but for a price (extra) so if you've been gassed, check your recovery conditions now.

I have a jeep ... been converted for a while. It is a P reg and I've donen over 60k miles since done.

I paid a bit more and got a jeep replacement petrol tank (30ltr fuel pump still fits) and have an under slung lpg cylinder (60ltr). Petrol tank is at the rear and still plenty of clearence ... I do not use it for off-roading cometition. More for towing and the tow bracket is the lowest bit.

Hi,

I know its OK to run a car without a spare, I dont think its a testable item ..unless its a TAXi

I know the Smart car was one of the first production car to not have a spare as it was to save fuel and the front wheels/ tyres are different size to the rear , so in case of puncture you had a aerosol tyre repair kit i toolbag

If you ever needed a tyre for a Smart... £££

Maybe not so smart after all, I knew someone whom waited two weeks for a tyre, as in them days it was a funny size ?? metric ?
