Check timing.

When you get it running try it from cold with rad cap off, surging of water and overflowing means you still have air in system. Bubbles means head gasket, hope not. A compression test will rule it out

Drill one or two small holes in the edge of thermostat to help vent air when you fill, think I used one 3mm hole. Together with a header tank this cured all my problems. Before I did these things I tried everything to get rid of the air including jacking the car up to no avail, still had a big ol air bubble somewhere. If I can get around it with my lack of patience and knowledge you can!

Other causes for o/heating could be weak fuel mixture.

Blocked radiator fins or tubes.

Lack of air flow.

If you are using zetec, wrong rotation of w/pump.

T/stat.

These are just a few.

Head gasket can have a very slight blow through into coolant vessels without giving low compression readings.

Best way to diagnose head gasket in your instance would be to do a litmus type test of the coolant for combustion gasses.

Kits are not usually expensive and can be bought from motor factors or off the bay.

It would be good to do this sooner rather than later as you can spend lots of money illuminating things, as in your case w/pump.

It also beets taking off the head only to find nothing wrong.

Think I've fixed it I put in a bleed point in the highest pipe on the system had loads of air in it the temp goes up to 140 on the smith Guage don't think it's that accurate doesn't go any higher any more gave it a good run fan comes on still
