Tyres

Recommended Posts

Its come to that time where the tyres need replacing. I've had Yokohama A539 on the car from new they lasted 10 years and 15000 miles, I could get more out of them but I think their getting too old now. Dry grip was always excellent but wet grip was always bit iffy.

So its the usual questions, any recommendations for tyres and suppliers.

Looking on line Toyos look like a good buy but I've heard mixed reviews. I'd like tyres that would give a bit more confidence when it gets wet, but I can't be spending a fortune on them either.

Cheers Jez

I've fitted uniroyal rainsport 3's to the rear. Can't give much feedback yet though as haven't driven it that far on them yet and i also fitted camber shims so it feels different from before anyway. But in the few trips i've done i haven't noticed anything odd and it seems to roll nicely (might be more the camber shims as i've got less toe-in now as well). I like the look of the tread pattern which i know isn't actually important but if it makes you happy and all that :)

Think they were £49 fitted each which i thought was a pretty good price.

Jez. I have the t1rs and once warmed up and have some heat in them they are great in the dry and reasonable in the wet. Only issue is when they are cold they are horrid. Mine seem to like a bit of heat in them!

Dan ... when I asked my MOT garage about fitting a set of these, they claimed that they were not road legal. Were they wrong then?

Not that kit cars are renown for fuel efficiency ... but aren't these tyres 'very thirsty'?

Issue is whether they are E-marked. If not, they are technically illegal to sell and use on the road as they fall foul of construction and use regulations. I used to have the relevant part printed out and carried with me in the competition car just in case, but for the life of me can I find it now?!

I had TOYO T1R fitted to the MX5, In the dry they were ok (but no more than ok)

but awful in the wet. But they were in an uncommon size. I ditched them after 1000 miles.

On the Hood, ive always had michelins, at first pilot sport which were superb, but when they

wore out I fitted Michelin energy saver as they were 1/2 the price of pilot sports.

They have tremendous grip in the wet and dry. I also have 888s on spare rims for

hot summers & track days.....just dont go out in the rain in them.

I just ordered 4 Rain Expert 3's from Camskill, they seemed about the cheapest.

Slight correction, I've got Rain Sport 3's for the front and Rain Expert 3's for the rears due to differing sizes. I can't see much difference between the two looking at the specs but I'll know more when the actually turn up.
