Hi I've recently bought a kit car and I've slowly been preparing for the iva test, over the past two nights I've stripped out the seats and some of the carpet. my cars sheet metal doesn't seem that good. See pics. What does every think?

Definately needs tidying in some place.

Rivets need replacing.

Week/cracked spots need repairing.

It looks not unbuilt but used, as in been registered before.

Are you sure someone has not just taken off the chassis plate and used it elsewhere? It does happen.

The chassis tubing looks like rust pitting as though it's a mild steel instead of s/steel

That will have to be well cleaned up and painted.

That's only my opinion and just from looking at the photoes.

I'm sure someone more experienced will be along to help later.

Won't IVA man want to see the belt mounts, meaning all will have to be lifted or photoes taken.

Not to sure but I know John still building had to strip his to show mounts, and clear under the foot well for wiring inspection.

The circle of rust and splits looks a bit suspect to me, but difficult to see in photo. The more zoom you give it, the worse it seems.

Consider that this part of your car is a sling --- & your ass is going to be in it --- travelling at squilloins of miles an hour --- do you want gravel rash on your bum at that speed??

Needs a fair amount of work to join the seat back & floor panels together & re-attach them both to the chassis.

Carpet & under-seal just don't quite make the grade.

As florin metal works said, if you're going to do it, do it right and then you won't have to go back to it. Depending on what you want the car for and how much you want to spend will decide the finish but it needs to be assembled correctly. If it were mine I would be tempted to strip it completely down and get the chassis shotblasted and powdercoated as a start.

Cheers for the replies. This is my first kit car so didn't know what to expect. My plan next winter is to get the car back to a bare frame and rebuild it but id like to get it through the iva test first. The reason for me doing it a bit backward is that if I don't iva it soonish I'll just get bored and it'll just sit in the garage.

I agree with your principle, however if your car fails over some serious issues, would you get turned off at having to rebuild it anyway to get it through. The test is by no means a simple walk in the park with its many rules and regs to study. Just by not knowing and understanding the regs, you would probably be heading towards a fail anyway.

With the test being over £500, I don't know how long the cheaper retest fees run for. On top of that, the winter is fast upon us so it would make sense to look at next season as a completion time.

With regards to the shot blasting, if you take off the body, or enough to gain access to all of the chassis, there are some excellent products on the market that would remove the need of shot blasting. ie POR15.

If these products are applied as per directions, they do a good permenent job.

The choice of course is all yours, even though I appreciate you are between a rock and a hard place.

HTH and not hinders, Ken.
