Driveshaft Info Help

Recommended Posts

The outer cv joint of my S7 offside driveshaft boot was loose, on inspection there is a 'loose ring' inside the boot on the shaft, this appears to have been what the boot was fastened to. Can anyone help with the following

What is the easiest method to remove driveshaft (push in type)

Are there different shafts that ford used or is it a common shaft, my offside shaft measured 22" from diff to brake drum backing plate

Where is the best place to obtain a replacement driveshaft

Thanks in advance

Harry

The offside and nearside shafts are different lengths.

There are 2 different thicknesses of drive shaft too, and different

size inner joints where they enter the diff.

Nothing's ever easy is it? :) :)

No need to jump in and get a new complete shaft just yet.

If the gaters not torn or damage no need to remove it, just slide along the shaft. Even if you have to carefully cut through the retaking strap on the other end of the gater.

If there is no radial play in the shaft, wash out with some parra fin, diesel or similar.

When all the joint is clean and dry, recheck for radial or rotational play.

If any play at all, replace either that joint or the whole shat.

If no play, stuff it with hypoid grease, pull the cover back over it and secure with cable ties to suit. Yes cable ties. Just make sure they don't foul any parts after you trim the excess off.

This will save you money when there is no need to spend it and quite a bit of time stripping off the hub, brake assembly, backplate and four very nasty bearing housing bolts that often either shear or strip there own threads.

Well worth a try. Use the ford manual when completing task as it is very handy to refer to if not used to this job.

Hope you get the easy way out if joint ok.

As Bob states, different shafts for different sides on some vehicles.

Totally different length shafts on other vehicles.

Some kits fitted with same shafts on both sides.
