Fuelling

Car conked out today :boohoo: on a duel carriageway, not much petrol in it but did it after a real burst of speed just before some lights...

Anyway 130 miles, shouldn't have run out of petrol yet but had can so thought throw some in anyway.

On releasing the cap it took a big gasp & the petrol tank (RHE 30ltr stainless) went boing as it came back into shape.

Started fine after that!

Had a brief look at the setup tonight & it looks weird, (there is a pipe T'd into the filler bend which is routed round & into one of the pipes on the fuel sender...) will post pics tomorrow but meantime if anyone has a good description pref with pics of how there's is setup (& working reliably of course!) I'd be grateful....

P.s. this is the first time this has done it in 1,400 miles but I've only let the tank get that low once before... (if that makes a difference...)

Salty your tank is not vented to atmosphere and is building up a vacuum. You have a pipe linking the fuel return in the sender to the filler pipe which is fine for venting while filling but your fuel cap is airtight. You need to T in another pipe with a one way valve that will allow air to enter but not allow fuel to exit in the event of a roll. Alternative to a valve is a tall up and down again loop of pipe passing well above the top of the tank crossing to the other side of the car and down, ending open, below the bottom of the tank.

or alternatively a small hole through the filler car to let the air vent. The older caps didn't fully seal on purpose, the air could escape through the key workings, with the fancy things that are fitted nowadays, you need to have a vent on the tank, or as i said, drill a small hole through were it can't be seen.
