Hi Guys

My name is Craig and I am new not only to this site but to kit cars, I live just outside Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire,

I have just recently purchased a 2B, Fitted with 2.0ltr Pinto , I think it has a standard radiator fitted with electric cooling fan support.

I would like to change the radiator from what I think is a standard unit , to something more robust and that will help the engine stay cool, I do not intend to race or track day the car.

Would anyone be able to recommend:

The best and most efficient radiator that will fit?

The best electric fan kit ?

I have also been told that bleeding the system can sometimes be awkward and air locks are common, and advice on how to do this would be appreciated, sorry to start my first post with questions...

Looking forward to meeting some of you at an event soon, and thanks in advance for all your help.

Craig

Welcome to the club lots of useful information. Firstly that radiator should be ample, are you suffering from overheating?

I would keep the same set and clear the front of the radiator to improve airflow, possible use sheet metal to make sure all air goes through the rad and the easiest route around. Also often over looked by many it's not only getting cool air in you must get the warm air out of engine bay, vent in bonnets ot side of body works.

The rad fan looks like one of the cheapo eBay fans which are rubbish. I changed from a cheapo rubbish one to a Comex pusher fan and the difference is night and day

Hi Guys for the super quick responses,

I think the rad fitted has a problem, it has leaked overnight so I need to change it , I found on Ebay item number:161938783420 what do you think,?c it seems better and more efficient than the stock unit.?

The Comex fans , thanks for the recommendation I shall Google them shortly.

To answer MarkBzero , yes I had a short drive yesterday and the temp was of the scale , the expansion bottle was full of water ( hot ) . Could it be air locked? if so what is the best way to drain and bleed the system, I will have to do this because I will definitely be fitting a new rad and fan.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

Think they might have been having a dig at each other. Welcome, you are near to me, I am in chatteris we will have to meet up. Temperature seems to be a very common topic on here. What gauges does your car have, are the senders and gauge matched up. It may not have got as hot as you think if it didn't boil up. Having said that if you have a leak it makes sense to get the most efficient one you can fit in. I run a vauxhall redtop engine and I think my radiator is just a Ford cortina or capri and it seems to cope OK. Make sure your fan is pressed tight against the radiator and that there is no air gap around the side. Mine had a gap and I hadn't noticed until somebody else pointed it out.

As somebody else said use some shrouding so that all the air has to go through the radiator rather than around it. Getting rid of the hot air is important too, use louvres, extra vents or even lift the back end of the bonnet to get rid of as much air as possible.

Get it sorted quickly and we'll have a run down to the Coast!

Hi

Thanks for the advice, if you are

in the area pop in for a swift one, or even a coffee... :good: be good to get someone to cast another set of eyes over it. I think the gauges are from a MK1 Escort .

Thanks again and looking forward to meeting you soon.

Welcome.

If your gauge is reading off the scale it maybea sender mismatch issue, it may also be a voltage regulator issue. A few classic cars used 10v supply and 12v makes them read high. Just check the power source.

Too bleed is very simple. An easy way is just run it with the PVRV Rad cap off. When the stat opens you will bleed air out. But watch for coolant overflowing.!!

Another way if the cap is not the highest point is to jack up the front so then the cap is as high as it can be. Filling up like this should prevent airlocks or at least minimise it.

Hi

Thanks Paul, great idea about jacking the car up. In this car just before the pipework dissapears into the heating matrix it has a screw of cap on the water pipe, this is higher than the rad cap so maybe remove this?

Thanks for the advice.

Definitely if it's the highest opening in the system. I used to have terrible trouble with airlocks in my system. I would fill the car up and run it with the radiator cap off topping up until the engine got hot then all of a sudden a great big gout of coolant would come out of the radiator leaving it half empty. I'd refill two or three times until I got rid of the air. I fitted a header tank and put a blank cap on the radiator and now I just fill it once, check the level and away I go.
