Type 9 Rebuild Started

decided to have a go as the quotes for a new box are steep £600 upwards depending on spec. Thankfully i have the older haynes manual that has a detailed strip down description, all be it one of the stages is wrong !! it took me a few hrs to figure it but did 8). the box is now now striped and i think ive found the problem, the needle rollers and lay shaft, there should be 21 in there i found 14 in tact 4 in half then a few bits of spacer ring + a good teaspoon worth of metal grindings attached to the magnet in the bottom. the lay shaft is also very worn where the needles sit. The other strange bit is there are meant to be 2 spacers i found 3 and a few bits?? it would seem that is my problem.

It was a lot easy to strip than i feared, now its decision time fix as is or upgrade to tall 1st and heavy duty bearings etc

I used to work at a capri specialist and we stripped and rebuilt quite a few type 9s. always worn layshafts and rear bearings.

the 4 speed is bullet proof the 5 speed not as good.

tried 'all gears' in worksop. ive seen em never had a price though

When I mated the V8 to the type 9, I spent hours upon hours reading about the type 9, it's flaws, upgrades etc........and even had a few telephone conversations with a couple of companies who specialise in the type 9 upgrades.

The first thing that became apparent was the minefield of different options, combinations etc.......

Although I've not physically gone down this road yet....I've played it out in my head numerous times. My thoughts are;

Not to get too hung up on changing the 1st gear ratio

I agree it's a pretty pants ratio and the v6 T9 is better that the standard T9 box, although it is still not ideal for our light weight cars.......at the end of the day, 1st gear is only ever used for pulling away.....never used on a track days and hardly ever used on roads.

So from this, the conclusion I drew was that paying for a better 1st ration (V6 or custom) isn't worth the extra money, but that's just a personal choice

The weakness in the T9 is the layshaft bearings.....as can be seen from your photo Dan. You can replace the layshaft with HD bearings for a few hundred pounds and cure the 1st main weakness in the T9 box.

The the next weakest point I believe is the 3rd and 4th baulk ring.....again these can be upgraded for not a massive amount of money.

If upgrading the main 2 weakest points in the type 9, I still managed to chew up the box......I decided it wouldn't be worth me spending any more money on it and so after picking up my teddy, I would spend the money and mate the engine to a different / stronger box.

Please don't think I'm trying to be an expert here....after all I've not done any of this yet. I just thought I'd share my thoughts after spending so much time reading up on the subject a couple of years ago.

I love my BGH gearset. Did the case mods, rebuilding the type 9 is a piece of piss. Made myself up a long puller for 5th, and had to make up the lever tools that BGH suggest for getting the lower bearing out, but otherwise it was plain sailing.

Would thoroughly recommend doing it yourself if you can - the money people want for doing it is taking the piss.

Cheers,

Dan

The V6 ratios are better and the lay shaft bearings stronger so its probably the best standard box to work with.

I have a spare and perhaps one day will do the first gear mod which on the V6 variant is 2.73 which with a 7k or more red line gives 40+ mph

From a conversation with a type 9 parts supplier I. M leaving the box standard it's not worth the hundreds of £££ to gain a few mph. I will renew all the bearings and be done with it. My money is going into the axle via a quaife atb diff and ratio drop from 4.1 to as low as I can find in mk2 escort.
