Those We Remember At Christmas

My mother passed away earlier this year at the age of ninety seven amongst her belongings we found this poem about my father who died twenty two years ago,

The Lonely Widow

You have no one to kiss goodnight

to give you a hug and hold you tight

to sympathise and hold your hand

when things don't go as you planned

you have no one to give you a pill

and reassure you when you are ill

you have no one when a birthdays here

to say happy birthday to you dear

the little gifts he manage to buy

you will treasure till the day you die

you have no one to calm your fears

and dry away your many tears

to be a friend when you need advice

when you buy a new dress to say you look nice

you have no one to push the trolley

or when it rains to hold the brolly

to make the morning cup of tea

to disapprove when views you don't see

you have no one to put in a screw

or that elusive nail when there's a job to do

to take the dog for a walk

or just to sit down and talk

memories are all we have

some are happy some are sad

one day our loneliness will cease

and once more we will be together and rest in peace.

We do not always realise the hurt that our loved ones are suffering
