Alternator You Could Fry An Egg On

First thing to do would be to check voltages with a multimeter. Plenty of hits on google will show you how to do that.

It's not heat soak from a nearby exhaust or anything is it?

You don't have a master breaker anywhere do you?

Bad earth or a short somewhere?

You've not got any major circuits on the car, I mean, is 30 amps enough....? It all adds up... 4 amps for a 55w bulb, for example, 3-4 amps for a fuel pump, anything up to 10-15 amps for a cooling fan, an amp here and there for ignition, electronics...

edit: presumably it's not a knackered bearing in the alternator either, it spins freely, no noises....?

It's their "Denso" type alternator.......

No obvious play or knocking....

Although I have to say that if I stick the old big screwdriver against my ear and on the case it sounds "rumbly"....

However, it's done less than 50 miles since fitting....

I am running a basic set up in terms of draw,

I will check the output and report back

Most likely the voltage regulator(s) or diodes have packed up in it, I would think. You could take it apart and test, and potentially repair if you're handy with a soldering iron and can get the relevant parts... but realistically most people just swap it for a new one...

That's assuming all the electrical connections are good, of course, but even then I don't think the vreg's should allow the alternator to get too hot anyway, I would image most have some sort of safety/current limit protection in them these days.... (?)
