Q Plate Mot After 1 Year?

I had 3 years on an age related plate, but I have heard of others with age related plate having MOT after 1 year. I suspect it is down to the DVLA operative processing your First registration document.

Thanks Rich - amazing that something so fundamental can be so misunderstood.

However, the latest V112 form is different to the one you used - there is now no section where you can say it was built less than 3 years ago.

I may be playing phone ping-pong with the DVLA on monday...

Take the test -- it will prove your car is still roadworthy -- worth the £50 or so. We had 3 years "grace" before due an MOT but still had a test done at our regular garage for the peace of mind (without paperwork ) -- a worn steering u/j & a noisy prop bearing were "advisories" from these " un-necessary" tests. So as said peace of mind for all the times you are flying down the road in a home built egg-shell.

Hi. Neal,

When I contacted DVLA to check a few details for registration before sending in the paperwork I was told by the "Lady" I spoke to that I needed to send in a MOT certificate with the paperwork, this was 6 days after the IVA.

So it looks like you have had a year free of MOT.

I thinks they change the rules as they go along, No logic to all this and the guide lines differ depending who you speak too,

As Bob say's it;s a small price to pay to know that your car is safe to drive and not going to fall to pieces.

Regards Martin

The problem with taking the test is that my windscreen washer doesn't work, which i think is a certain fail.

With my other problem right now (engine rattle), i just want to get that fixed and have some fun driving time in this great weather, not be stuck trying to get the washer working. Its electrical and could be a pain to fix. My IVA was only a year ago and was much more detailed than an MOT so I'm happy the car is fundamentally sound.

washer is dead easy. If you have a bottle and pump already set up just add a momentary switch and run a live from the battery. If you need the bottle as well i literally used an old 2.5 litre bottle and cut a hole to put the sierra pump in. Only ever use it at mot.

It looks like an mot is required after 1 year. If you look on the back of the V112 form it says:

"Categories of vehicles that are exempt:"

"Section r (GB only) A vehicle other than a public service vehicle registered or manufactured 40 years ago and which has not been substantially changed in the last 30 years."

Then:

"The following vehicles (including motorcycles) are to be considered as substantially changed, unless they are taxed as an “historic vehicle” and have not been modified during the previous 30 years:

• A vehicle issued with a registration number with a ‘Q’ prefix."

Since they are now considering Q reg as substantially changed then you apparently can't now claim exemption and an mot would be required.

If you look at the front of form V112 it states as below.

Under section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to use a car, motorcycle or light goods vehicle without an MoT certificate on a public road unless the vehicle is ‘exempt’ from MoT testing (that is, it does not have to have an MoT test) because it is:

• one of the types listed

‘a’ to ‘n’ over the page;

or • less than three years old.

Try filling in the form Neal and take to the post office. That's what I am going to do at my next renewal.

I've downloaded the latest form from the website and i don't see that wording?

I'd be really careful as if somehow you can get it taxed without the MOT by using a form it doesn't necessarily mean the DVLA database will be updated to say you have a valid mot or are exempt for the next 2 years. Use the online checker to make sure it says it's ok afterwards or if you have a bump you'll be in a whole mess of trouble.
