2B Rear Ended

I was out for a run in the 2B Sat. morning when a bike smashed into the back of me. The rider had dropped it and the bike slid for 70ft before it hit me. According to my data log I was doing a steady 47mph (indicating for a left turn) so he must have been going quite a lick. He was lucky and seems to have got away with some nasty cuts and bruises. I’ve got whiplash.

His bike (a large Triumph triple) is totalled. I’m wondering what is going to happen to my 2B. The obvious damage is to the rear panel and wings etc. However when you look closer, as the bike slid under the rear, it has shoved the rear tubular crash structure upwards and inwards, partially crushed the tank, fuel pipes and splintered the rear deck. The rear diff. mount plate has distorted from flat by 20mm so I’m amazed the diff. didn’t crack.

What’s the insurance company going to make of this? (I’m with A Plan). I can’t see the chassis being repairable. After 10 years of building and fettling I don’t know if I can face another major rebuild, but the thought of it being written off and losing all the hours I put into the engine to suit the supercharger and fuel injection is heartbreaking. Here are some photos:-

I had some accident damage repaired at GBS

Byway my Insurence underwriter could not find a repairer with it being a kit car.

I will pm you some info.

Ken.

I know you must be devastated after the bump, but at least you escaped any major injuries thanks mainly to the strength of the 2b chassis. If I had a bump in any kit then a 2b would be my car of choice, a friend of mine demolished a telegraph pole in one and escaped with 2 broken ribs. Take your time in deciding on the repairs, buy it back from the insurance co if it is a write off and see if a small independent repairers or GBS would replace any damaged chassis. Best of luck, but as I said at least you are relatively o.k.

I think this car can live again. The diff mounting point is a fairly weak part of the chassis, so maybe the damage does not extend beyond the angle iron section, which could be cut out and replaced. The spare wheel carrier could be cut off for a quick fix?

edit: Your diff mounting section looks different to mine

It does seem repairable, I guess its how much its insured for? As to the root cause, I've noticed that in Cambridgeshire the number of bikers driving like dicks has gone through the roof! I had one "wheelieing" (?) past the house the other day at way more the 60! The dual carriageway by the house has became a speedway of late with very loud & fast moving bikes going up and down it all evening! Glad your alright and give me a shout if you want a hand to strip and rebuild it if that's the way you go, I still owe for your help with my suspension.

time for an IRS double wishbone rear end project?

Heard a motorbike go past the GF's house early in the morning the other day which woke us up. Easily doing 100+ the way it was screaming must have been WOT. If they want to kill themselves fine, just don't take the rest of us out in the process.

I've spoken to GBS today and they say they should be able to repair it, if not they can re-chassis it so keeping fingers crossed. Fortunately I paid the 10 quid extra for legal assistance when I renewed this year so A Plan have passed everything to loss recovery and injury claim companies to sort out. Looks like they will contact GBS to arrange transport / estimates etc..we will see!

Yes the 2B is a tough bugger. Trouble is if it is stretched back to shape it wont be so strong and the fuel tank is right at the back. A couple of more mm and the fuel pipes would have gone. Have also realised that the lift pump isn't rattling now, so I must have driven the 3 miles home on what was in the swirl pot.

Haven't heard anymore from the police yet with the biker details. Apparently there are two sets of insurance recorded for the bike and due to a computer glitch they can only see the details of the 1 which has been wrongly applied!

Bad luck that. You can be as careful as you like but takes just one twat to undo it all. Make sure you go to the doctors with that whiplash in case the insurance company decide to pursue a claim. My wife got shunted by a boy racer and it took some time to get over her whiplash but at least she did get a payout for it.
