Road Tax

Having just registered my car with a 2L Zetec, I was annoyed to find that the road tax was £245 rather than £140 for the 'standard rate' cars - I am on the PLG tax class 11 for some reason.

I was wondering if it would have been cheaper if I was taxed by CO2 emission but after looking here:

http://www.nextgreencar.com/view-car/5653/ford-focus-2.0i-16v-4dr-saloon-2004-petrol-manual-5-speed/

...it seems my 2004 engine has CO2 emissions of 205 g/km which would mean a tax rate of, get this, £1,200  :o

I decided to shut up and sneak away...

Ahh, that web page makes more sense than the paper I've got - I was confused why there was a table underneath the CO2 emissions table which said for 'standard cars' but that is the rate you pay for the 2nd year onwards - got it now.

So that £1,200 would only only be for the 1st year, then £140 a year - not as bad as I thought, I guess....penalises anyone who buys a new car every year or 2, I suppose.

It's a pain, but that's correct for over 1549cc. £245 eeek, not looking forward to taxing mine now haha I remember us being £200 ish max. My 10.5litre 9.5mpg double decker bus costs £165 a year on "private HGV" tax! sadly that's only for vehicles over 3.5t gross, but means motorhomes over 3.5t can get that rate.

I still think it should be included in fuel, but then they add extra onto fuel too "just because", it's all a way of taking more money out of us.

Agree with the "add it on fuel" suggestion...However..I have always "sorned" my seasonal vehicles, but as retirement now looms I may decide that a run in the winter sun appeals...In which case consider this a winge on £245 excise duty

Changes in taxation system only affect cars registered after 1st April 2017

Actually, I thought that as well but on the DVLA website, when I enter my V5 number, it tells me my road tax is £270. I can't actually remember if I've paid road tax for the Lexus before but it should be the same as the PHEV, I think... Maybe I haven't...

what is more frustrating it having a 1.6 pinto which is 1597cc which is 48cc bigger than the 1549cc limit :(

having to pay ~£100 more for the sake of 48cc's is annoying. Even more so when a 1.4k-series is quite a lot more powerful and would be cheaper. If there was a dohc 1.4 ford engine that had ~100bhp i'd swap to it, but none of the little ford engines seem to be that good.
