Spookier & spookier....

When I was looking for the rattle I spotted that the alternator

adjustment bracket was broken, & took it off, welded it & refitted it.

I was really pi**ed when the rattle was still there after that

Happened to me the other week Bob. That's why I thought it is worth a check

My car is a rattler by default.. Soooo many rattles im not sure where most of them come from. The ones I have identified are

Alternator bracket ...Fixed

Exhaust catching bonnet hole... Live with it

1st 3rd 5th gear noise... Live with it

Diff..... Live with it

Clutch when disengaged... Live with it until it breaks properly

Shocks banging.... Fixed

Gear lever rattling in 1st 3rd and 5th.... Elastic bobble hair band under the gaiter from stick to gaiter screw seems to have stopped that.

Just had another though, it's not the water pump bearing is it? Drop the belt off and see what the bearing feels like.

Might be this - took the belt off, ran the engine briefly and no rattle. There seems to be a tiny amount of play in the bearing, literally 1mm or something - does that sound enough to be knackered?

What happens if I just leave it? Will it just gradually get worse or can it go bang in a big enough way to damage the rest of the engine?

Matt is right. A water pump should have zero play.

Get a well known brand to replace it.

It could be that the engine had been standing for years & the seal/bearing had dried out.

But on the bright side, a cheap, easy fix!!!

Annoyingly, that's the only one I can't find for sale except as a kit with the belt, which I don't need.

Ordered an Airtex - seem to be good reviews online...

Thanks for suggesting the water pump as a possible problem, Rich - I may never have considered that otherwise... ^_^

Hmm, Ok changed the pump but not fixed it :-(

I've now noticed that just a light touch on the clutch pedal produces a light, machine gun type rattle. I've done a video (link below) - see what you think. At the start, you can hear the rattle as I touch and release the clutch pedal. Then, as I'm driving with clutch out and rev up to 2500 in 2nd gear, you can hear a louder but similar rattle (clearest at 47 secs in) .

Is this the same rattle? Clutch?
