I'm not sure if it's then burnt in the engine, or if it goes back to the air.

Ozone is a relatively reactive and unstable substance especially at low atmospheric levels.

It is formed in the stratosphere by the action of sunlight on oxygen molecules which split into two oxygen atoms, these then combine with another molecule of oxygen to form ozone. In the stratoshere ozone absorbs harmful ultra-violet light.

At the lowest levels (troposphere), ozone may be formed by by the action of sunlight on gaseous nitrogen oxides [NOx], volatile organic compounds [VOCs] and oxygen.

Catalytic converters reduce the formation of low level ozone by removing the nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases
